Is it normal for a vagina to have jelly-like discharge?

I've been wondering this one for many years now. My ex, from way back, used to get little globules of jelly in her vagina. It was a huge turn-off. They appeared to form randomly and we couldn't figure out why or what the cause was. She was too embarrassed to see a doctor about it, despite my concern that there might be something serious going on. Any idea what this was or if its normal? I've never come across this with any other girls since.
