Is it normal for a parent to treat their daughter this way

My sister has Down's Syndrome. While I was home from university I witnessed my mom telling my sister that today she ( my sister that is) would shave her legs. Now, my sister has never held a razor before, nor has she been walked through the steps on how to shave and this was new to her as the normal rule in our house was that if she kept learning how to do things for herself that she would continue to get personal hygiene help for another year. Two weeks ago she made Kraft Dinner and last week she did 3 loads of laundry perfectly. My question is this: is it normal for a parent to change their mind so suddenly about something so drastic? Also how could I politely tell my mom that I think this pace she has chosen will hurt my sister more than help her?

Maybe your mom is stressed out and didn't think it through thoroughly. Let her know in a respectfully way if your not trying to push buttons something like "Are your sure she'll be able to do it without anything happening?"

    1. It's great that your sister is making such good progress.

    2. I really think that you should sit down and talk to your mother about your concerns. Perhaps, she's getting impatient with your sister's progress. She might feel as though she's not progressing fast enough to her standards. Or, like another user said before me, it could be due to stress. But still, she should be able to understand what effects her demands could have on others.
