Is it normal for a mother to keep reminding her 23 year old daughter..

Is it normal for a mother to keep reminding her 23 year old daughter that she is old now, not young. Example: "Don't buy that lime green shirt, it's too young for you. You're 23, not 17! You should wear patterned shirts with flowers or abstract."-actual convo.

  • Yes, mothers always like to give their daughters fashion advice; they were the ones who picked our outfits for about ten years of our lives.

As we get older, it's not them that has to change, we are the ones that STOP listening to that advice and make our own choices. Give her the respect she deserves and hear her out, but it doesn't mean you have to do exactly what she says either.

You'll learn to tune her out eventually.

23 is an age where you are maturing but should not be considered old and is definetly old enough to pick out what you want to wear for yourself wear what you please.

If you still dress like you are in high school than you should reconsider.

I think it's normal, but not very nice. My mother still tells me things like that and I'm in my thirties. Not so much about my clothing but about everything else. At some point you have to be your own person, regardless of Mom's fashion sense.

Normal yes. But try responding with this : yes im 23 now, im not ten anymore, so my mom shouldn't be picking out my clothes. Your an adult, you can make big girl decisions, especially something as minor as what clothes YOU want to buy with YOUR money. Your mom needs to chill.

  • My opinion is that you are only old once you hit 60.
Are you serios your mom sounds like fucking Ray Barone's annoying bag-of-shit mom.
I mean really just ignore here buy and wear whatever you want, whatever floats your boat, you are and adult any you have been one ever since you were 18 you dont need some old lady bitching about what YOU should wear.
You're still young, its time for you to manage your own life!

I think your mother has some jealousy issues. She's jealous of the fact you're 23 and she's whatever age, so she puts you down. Ignore her!

Youre young and beautiful, and maybe mommy is angry and resentful. Dont listen to her.

That would piss me off. I'm 27 and I often dress like I'm 17, lol. I don't care what my parents say about it anymore...

  • Just politely thank her for her advice and remind her that since you are "old" enough now to make your own wardrobe decisions.

Are you the same 23 year old who wrote that story about guys thinking she's 16? Maybe your mother is trying to help you look your age.

I'm not sure her advice is good (to me "patterned shirts with flowers or abstract" sounds like something a middle-aged woman would wear not a 23 year old, but maybe that's just the way she worded it) but changing the way you dress certainly could help you look more like a 23 year old if you are in fact the same one from that other story.
