Is it normal for a marine to leave a girl he likes?

So there's this guy.... Anywhoo, we met in high school but were only acquaintances and recently bumped into each other. It's been years since we seen one another. We started going on dates, having drinks & catching up. We enjoyed each others company & had so much in common. It was finally someone who "mesh-welled" lol with me. I found out he was in the marines but hadn't been deployed yet. Finally after a couple months, he was called in. He's in Virginia now & invited me to a marine ball. In which I went & had a blast! It was my first time going away to visit a guy in another state, at a random time! So everyday he would call & text me, to make sure I was okay. Ok long story short.... He's gone & is leaving for Afghanistan next month, I've grown to really like him. I've told him this, except he doesn't want a relationship with me because of "his situation". But he thinks I'm an awesome person, who came at the wrong time. Is this normal for a guy to say?? Is he bull shitting me because he's a guy & in the "marines". Not to stereo type, but like everyone says Marines are just looking for one thing?? We're still friends & text each other all the time. Should I continue to have hopes for a possible relationship in the future, or just move on & continue to be "friends".?? Advice please :)

    It has nothing to do with you; he loved you very much.

    A lot of my friends left their girls when they were deployed and to this day still question their decision. Sometimes the momentum of human history tears apart what otherwise would have been "meant to be".

    I think he just doesn't want to have someone waiting for him when he gets deployed...worst feeling ever..

    I think he loves you and he doesn't want to be serious with you cause he knows he is leaving... Be mature and talk about it

    My cousin is in the marines, and he broke up recently with his girlfriend, cause he couldn't deal with realationships. Just talk to your boyfriend, and ask him why. But its probably because your far from distance, and he cant be inlove at this moment. Just call him one night and solve everything.., My cousin just came back from Japan.
