Is it normal for a guy to lie about his mother's name?

So basically, I met this guy and I'm really interested in him. We're both actors and I was performing a monologue. My character in the monologue talks about how her mother named Maggie left her when she was young. So after the monologue the guy said, "Funny, my mom's name is Maggie." To make a long story short, I found out for sure that his mom's name isn't Maggie. Why do you think he lied? And do you think it's a big deal or not?

That's an old joke, isn't it? When you meet a girl and she tells you her name, you say "That was my mother's name".

Although it didn't work for me when I met Arantxa Sánchez Vicario. She could clearly see I wasn't Spanish. Or human, come to that. Grr!

Maybe Maggie is her pet name?
    Or her maiden name?

Maybe it was code that she'd left him when he was younger - even if she did come back.
