People can appreciate beauty that they are attracted to even if they are not sexually attracted to that person. Hell, I remember when I was going hom from college on the bus there was this dude and he just looked amazing. His clothes, his hair, his face, everything. It was like I had my nose rubbed against the bus window just staring while he stared back. >_>
He probably is not entirely gay. Some gay men are interested in women but for whatever reasons things just didn't turn out right with women so they turned gay. Not all gay people are actually fully gay some just turned that way for whatever reason. He probably likes girls but just turned gay because he couldn't get any
