Is it normal for a friend to hate me because i'm dating his ex

My friend for over 10 years broke up with his girlfriend about 4 months ago and recently her and I started seeing each other. They had dated off and on for a little over a year. Durring that time he cheated on her 3 times and treated her like garbage. Since they have been split for good all he did was talk Ill of her. I didn't intend to get mixed up with this girl, but we had become friends during their relationship and would occasionally grab a beer after work. I really didn't think that he would be this upset about this. I told him last night that we had been seeing each other for the past month. I wanted him to hear it from me and not from someone else. Now I don't know if this new relationship will be one of any consequence or not and dont want to loose a good friend over a fling. I also understand where he is coming from. 4 years ago a similar situation happened to me. I have forgiven the friend that betrayed me and we are still friends today. So I guess my question is will he be able to look past this indiscretion and remain my friend. Also would it be any different if I had just slept with her and wasn't in a relationship with her. I'm going crazy trying to figure thus out and could use some advice. Thanks in advance for any help

    Ummm screw the bro code if she is a good girl and he treated her like crap and cheated on her then she deserves better. If you feel like you are a better person for her then take a chance. He sounds like an asshole anyways

    People should be able to date who they want..no matter who theyve been with in the past. if their relationship was completely over..he shouldnt care who she dates next. ive seen so many people get mad because of who their ex dates next...thats so dumb! thats your EX. why would you care who they date next? yall aint together anymore! its normal because so many other people do it..but still really immature.

    - I think that if she deserves better , & you think the same .. you should go with what you feel is best . If he is a real friend , he would look past that. He had his chance.

    He has no right to control who she dates.

    He's jealous and his ego is bruised because he knows it's his own fault for treating her badly.

    If he's telling you to chose between his friendship and her love... then he's obviously not a good friend in the first place.

    I was dating a guy for a year, and ended up marrying his best friend. They didn't talk for awhile, but it wasn't long before they were best friends again.

    She obviously wasn't the love of his life. Go for it!

    Wanted to add that he will probly be ok wit it eventually IF he don't have any feelings for her AND you actually talk to each other by that time, I would definitely avoid you (ask first dude!)

    As soon as someone stops going out with someone, then they have no say about who they start a relationship with. This guy is acting like a big spoilt baby, he needs to grow up and put things in perspective. Go for it I say.
