Is it normal for a couple to sit in the back while their friend drives?

My boyfriend and I went out with his roomate/friend the other day to Walmart. His friend drove. My boyfriend sat in the backseat with me, rather than sit up front with his friend. The entire time, he held me and snuggled with me. It was a bit awkward for me, as I would never leave my friend alone in the front seat. Is this normal?

    If you weren't interacting with the friend who was kind enough to drive you around then that is rude. I understand why you felt uncomfortable.

    If he's going to do that then he should just pay a taxi fare.

      We interacted some with the friend, but mainly it was just us in the back. I just hope he doesn't expect me to do the same, if we are ever in a similar situation with one of my friends... definitely think it was kinda rude...

        If you're in that situation then I'd just get into the front seat, or offer him the front seat.

        If he asks about it later just say that you feel a bit rude getting into the back and explain why. He probably won't think it's a big deal.

    I would hate to feel like driving a taxi with friends sitting in the back seat ignoring me.

      That's what it felt like. Like we were being chauffeured, which made me uncomfortable.

    I'm used to young couples doing that. Maybe his roomate didn't mind because they talk so often anyway.
