Is it normal for a 10 year old to have germ phobia?

My nephew, who is only ten years old has a fear of touching anything germy, I was quite suprised when I found out because I thought ten would've been too young. Any advice? Why is he like this?

yeah its probably a phase. i had the same thing when i was a kid for a while because we had a doctor into our school to tell us about all the diseases and horrible stuff you get when you dont wash your hands or eat food thats gone bad. probly same thing happened to him, someone scared him.

actually my sister went through something like that when she was about 5 or 6 she would not touch ANYTHING that had germs or chemicals she eventually got over it. if i were you i would check with a doctor because my sister found out she has ADHD 3 years ago and now she 11. it could also be anxiety

I would keep a close eye on this behavior. If it passes great. Its not normal for it to go on for a long time unless its a learned pattern from a key person around him. Sometimes, children respond to traumatic issues this way when they cant express themselves in words.

It might just be a phase, my brother went through a phase like that, but he grew out of it pretty fast.

  • Your sib or someone close said something that scared the snot out of him. Why else? 10 year old boys shouldn't be scared of germs - they should be germy.

I was like that around his age.
I got so bad, I was scared of food poisoning so I became vegetarian to reduce the risk.
He should grow out of it.

There is nothing wrong of being scared of germs. It won't hurt the people around him so just let him be. You can never be too careful.

Maybe parents/teachers/relatives that are hygiene freaks. Too much TV commercials.

It might be PSYCHOSIS. I had a friend with the same phobia and later on it turned to be PSYCHOSIS and now he can't even go to school!
Not to mention about having friends or a girlfriend or anything!

CHECK A PSYCHIATRIST AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ! ! !

      That seems very unlikely.
