Is it normal for a 21 year old guy to date a 17 year old girl?

Here's the short story. I'm 20, turning 21 in a month. She's 16, turning 17 in a few weeks. Is this too much of an age gap? It doesn't really bother me, but I know the social implications that will go along with that. I just found out her age today, after being under the assumption she was older. We're not currently seeing each other, but it seems to be going that way.

16 and 20 was how old me and my husband were when we first started dating! So I think it is normal.

  • So here's the thing bro...I started to date my gf when she was 17 and I was 21 now we've been goin out for almost 5yrs and she's the love if my life and I'm planning on asking her to marry me this year. Her parents didn't like it at first but I didn't care and neither did she and it worked out amazing so I say go for it it might sound gay but follow your heart sometimes it works out

over here the legal age for girls is 16, don't know what country your from but here you wouldn't be doing anything wrong, but really I don't see the big issue here its not decades of an age gap is it, especially when I see young girls of 15/16 running off with old men in their 70s/80s

It's hardly uncommon for there to be an age gap, usually with the man being older. But you are both very young and there is a larger gap lifewise between the two of you than there would be if you were 31 and she 27. She's still in hs and you are nearing full on adulthood. Don't expect much from this relationship. Too much is going to change for the both of you in the next two years for things to have much hope of lasting. And since there is such an age disparity and it places her at a disadvantage with regards to maturity, access to alcohol, status, etc. be sure to treat her with patience, consideration, and respect. It's all too easy for a girl to end up with a loser douche bag just because she's attracted to older guys.

She didn't lie about her age... it just never came up. I was under the assumption because she seemed mature.

Well it's stacatory (sp?) rape if you do anything with her sexually... and she lied to you about her age. So you may want to rethink the dating thing till she is 18. But then again if it were me I don't think I'd want to date someone who lies about important things like age.

Definetly fine , 4 years ain't shit. Seriously if it was like 17 and 31 then it would be weird, but you're totally fine 100% :)

16 is legal in most states for sex without parental consent.
17 is legal for sex in all of the other states that the legal age isnt 16.
    Very simple.

My parents are 12 years apart. It's not exactly legal because she's a minor but as long as you don't do anything sexual with her till she reaches maturity your fine.

Imo it can depend on the person but I think 16/17 is too young to be dating a 21 yr old. That said I guess it's not too uncommon either, just don't do anything physical with her yet and don't rush her to do anything she's not ready for.

These days, it's becoming more and more common. You might want to wait until she's 18 though.

She may be legal to consent however, her mum and dad could press the stach charges since she's still a minor. Doesn't matter if she consents since legally they're responsible for her.

The other thing is that this is in Alberta, Canada, where the legal age is 18, not 21. Age of consent is also 16.

EXACT same situation here. Execept I'm the girl. Go for it, but make sure her parents know and are ok with it. Mine know that Lucas and I have had sex and have no problems with it. They know I love him so they support me. So cover your bases before you make it to them and you should be good. If your confident in your decision to be together, age shouldn't matter.

im 18 and my boyfriend is 22. nobody has a problem with it, the only thing that causes a problem is that im not old enough to go to bars with him, other than that its all good. and if she makes you happy, then go for it. just wait to make things serious until she turns 18. you dont want to catch any bullshit charges

If she is mature and you two want to, go for it i am 19 and my boyfriend is 23 we got together awhile ago and things are great the truth is i think most girls want to date older guys we mature faster than they do so a 3 or 4 yr age gap is nothing but be careful about the laws on sex whatever they are where your from i know here in michigan at 16 you can only have sex with other 16 years and at 17 its only 17 or 18 year olds unless you have a parents consent

  • As long as you like her enough, it's totally normal. I'm 17 and my boyfriend Is 20, and I know a couple that started dating at 14 and 19 and ended up getting married. It's not bad compared to a huge gap like a 20 and 50 year old.

Well it's stacatory (sp?) rape if you do anything sexually... and she lied to you. So if lying isn't a big deal to you I'd still hold off till she is 18.

You know the age gap could be worse and it would be perfectly fine if you guys were a little older but the fact that she's under 18 and not out of highschool yet (I'm assuming) makes it kind of awkward. But like I said it could be worse and if she makes you happy go for it. Just get consent before you touch her! ... At least that's how it works here in Nevada

Big maturity gap between 16/17 and 20/21. Personally I would look down at a guy for dating a child. And if it were my daughter it wouldn't be happening, if it did I would have the guy arrested. Have some respect man!

Not really. 16/17 is too old to be considered a child.
