Is it normal for a 4 year old?

As all parents believe, my child is extremely smart. What blows me away is that he is 4 with an amazing memory. He has been like this since he started talking in full sentences (about 2) and just remembers the most random stuff. He remembers the tiniest details from conversations or even from experiences. He even remembers stuff that many times I forget, which then he will explain to me in detail until I remember. For example we live in northern California and visit Santa Cruz few times per year. We were on our way last weekend and he stopped and said "mommy you remember last time we came you bought a necklace?" this again blew me away bc he wasn't even with me at the store, he was on the beach playing, and it wasn't like a big deal or discussion that I bought it. In fact I have maybe worn it two times since I got it and quite frankly forgot about it myself. Well anyone with children out there, have children with very sharp memories?

Maybe you are too distracted/caught up in your life to notice and remember "small" things yourself?

Maybe he made a big deal about it cause you don't normally buy jewelery? or maybe it was really shiny and he remembered that. Also remember that he doesn't have MANY years of memories as it is. I'd say he may be average/above normal. Keep him into it though. A very good gift to have. lol I can barely remember if I locked my front door before I drive out of my driveway ;)

Here's the thing.. Being that young, you've only absorbed a certain about of information. By the time you're say.. 20 years old, that's 20 years of information that you've absorbed - thus forgetting the smaller stuff. When you're a child you really look at everything in different ways.
I am 18 and still remember things from when I was 2. My family doesn't really understand how I remember it, but I will bring it up at random times too, and they are all just as baffled. Nothing abnormal about it - if anything, it's a gift :)

I'm the poster and his speech has always been normal if not advanced. I never baby talked (only bc baby talk personally annoys me) although he is going through a stage where he is baby talking with me only. He's like many kids very clever and manipulative. He's "advanced" scholastically because of the pre school he's going to, and my sister who is a teacher comes over often to "tutor" him. By 2 he knew all his numbers up to 20, shapes (like hexagon, we were in the garage one day he was 2 almost 3 and he pointed to a tennis racket and said "mommy, that is an octagon because it has 8 sides), and specific colors like he said "mommy my skin is beige". We would do flash cards etc. Still do but he can now do kindergarten flash cards, and can count to 50 (although starts skipping numbers past 30). I don't chalk this up to being smart just going to a great pre school. Most of the kids in his preschool are like him. It's cute too because he's the stereotypical "smart kid" which his eyeglasses. Anyways my thing isn't the stuff he knows because the majority of kids knw that stuff or can knw if they are taught (little sponges) it's just his memory that really baffles me. I've asked his teacher and she always laughs like "you're telling me, you can't promise this kid anything, bc he will hold you to it, he doesn't forget)

Does he have any troubles like speech, or does he do things unusual? Or is he as what you call normal. Just curious.

    I say he is genius!

Little kids always seem to remeber more than us older ones. My sister (now 13) just comes up with all these random scenes which happened when we were younger which I have no idea of (we are 5 years apart, me being the eldest).

If this continues throughout life then he is a smart one, could be photographic memory or something.

My little brother used to be just like that. He would remind me of random little things from months ago and have a clear memory of conversations he wasn't even apart of. All those times we thought he wasn't listening, apparently he was. I wish I could remember back when I was four, it makes me wonder if they're all that way.

I WAS ONE OF THEM MYSELF! I CAN (FOR REAL) REMEMBER MY SECOND BIRTHDAY, AND SOME OF THE DETAILS. I CAN REMEMBER THE COLORS OF CLOTHES THAT SOME OF MY FRIENDS WORE TO MY THIRD BIRTHDAY PARTY. YET, SHORT-TERM MEMORY IS TERRIBLE.

IT IS UNUSUAL, AND COULD BE CONSIDERED A SORT OF GIFT. CHILDREN'S MINDS ARE CLOUDED WITH WORRY AND CHAOS, SO THAT LEAVES A CLEAR MIND TO TAKE IN DETAILS THAT WE ADULTS OFTEN NEVER NOTICE.
