Is it normal dialect vs language

I hate when people don't understand the difference between dialect and Language. First off it sounds racist. Secondly it sounds incredibly stupid. I hate when people say "Oh hes speaking Mexican". No its Spanish! Same thing with American. "He should speak American in America" and I have heard actual AMERICANS(US) say this when they mean English. I also hate when these people will correct you when you say "English" or "Spanish" and say "No its Mexican" or "No its American".

Actually, there are several; "A Dictionary of the American Language". As far back as 1806, scholars realized that the English used in America was not the same as the English used by the members of the British Empire.
You will not find a crescent wrench, an open end or box wrench in any British country. They use "spanners"!
My second wife was raised in Guatemala, and though the language is indeed Spanish, a word commonly used in one Latin American country can be an unacceptably inappropriate word in another.
However, I do agree, there is no Mexican language. The world is changing, information is much more readily available, but it seems that ignorance is not diminishing, quite the opposite.

    • That really does not change the fact its "English". They speak Spanish in Spain and they speak it in Mexico. Its still Spanish. Look up the term dialect. http://hugh.thejourneyler.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/North-south-midland-US-dialect.jpg

      • Under that ruling everyone has their own unique language since people all have a style of speaking and writing.

So if we assume simply speaking the same language differently is a new language do you realize how many additional languages their would be?

We are not all special enough to count as our own language. So that is not a reasonable argument. Since we would have to apply it to every single individual.

        Man:I like to eat apples.

        Man2: I enjoy eating apples.

Man3: Apples are delicious to eat.

Same language and they are all saying the same thing but in a different way. So by that logic all 3 of these people should have a new language assigned to the way they speak specifically. Which is ridiculous.

Damn dude, nobody is arguing with you, just pointing out a few facts.
You sure get your feathers in an uproar easily.
Nothing about your post, my reply or yours is important enough to me to waste time looking up anything, or continue to "argue" with you.
I've never had anybody give a flying crap about what the 4 languages I speak are called, most are just thrilled I took the time and effort to learn theirs.

Languages have diverged a bit, which is why software producers often offer multiple versions of English and Spanish. I'd have to agree with you, though, that the divergence is often nowhere near enough to justify calling it another language.
