Is it normal- deadline?

It's just an average afternoon...until...*knock knock*! Who's there? Death:O! He is here to give you two options:

Option 1: You are given a deadline. Literally :P. You get to find out exactly when you die. And the date of your death will be on your 65th birthday. And upon finding this information out, you can NOT change anything. You *will* die at that age. However, you're free from the uncertainty we have now.

Option 2: Well this one isn't really any different to how things are now. You have no idea when you will die. It could be tomorrow, it could be in 70 years. Either way, just like how it is now, you don't know. You have to live with that uncertainty.

So, would you keep your life the way it is now, or find out when you are destined to die?

Option 1 32
Option 2 46

Fuck yeah, I'd be invincible until 65!

Think of all the stuff you could do and get away with, knowing that you would only die once you reached 65 >:)

I wouldn't want to know at all.
I fear death, I fear it greatly.
I fear the thought of conciousness ending at some point, I fear the insecurity of what will happen. I hope there's an afterlife, or reincarnation, but I fear nothing's there and that thought can keep me up at nights.

So no, I don't want to know when I'll die.

Option two. If I know something I'm not keen on is approaching, I procrastinate more. I figure that'd be amplified if it were death as opposed to my normal, every day life crap. I'd get to the end and have NOTHING to show for it and that'd be even more depressing.

I don't worru about death but option 2 is for me.

This is an old study which has been repeated several times; it turns out that around 95% of people in the US wouldn't want to know.
I find it ironic that most people automatically assume that they'd be 'invincible' until the date of their death, not realizing that one could still be injured terribly. You could be paralyzed from the neck down, lose all your limbs, et cetera and still be alive to wallow in misery until age 65.
In response to the original question, I'd rather not know. If you knew with certainty that you'd still be able to see that Van Gogh museum 30 years from now, you're likely to procrastinate on and on, wasting the days.
All the beauty one can experience in life comes from the awareness that it all could be gone tomorrow.

    • Ah, really? I'll have to have a look for it:).

And yeah, I didn't intend it to come across as the person will become invincible, but it's kind of interesting that people took it that way. As for your choice, it's an interesting way of looking at it. I honestly thought it would have the opposite effect, but now you've brought that up, I'm starting to think otherwise. I agree with you:).

Option to I hate seeing things coming that I can not avoid. Plus that adds five more years.

If I were to ask option 2, what option 1, would would say. Then through the process of logic I'd be aware of both options.

    Option 3. :)

Option 1. If I knew when I were to die then I could live my life according to that so I never have the chance for regret. It would make my life simpler.

Option 2. The average life expectancy in the US is 78 years.

Option 1, I would like to know when I'm going to die to give me a chance to say goodbye to loved ones and also I would try not to have any unfinnished bussiness with any one and try to do everything I want to do in life before I die. :)

Anyone who wants to have option #1 for real, all you have to do is commit a crime punishable by death!! In the US anyway, you'll get a solid execution date.

Make sure you do it in a state that actually executes people.

    • Haha, that made me laugh:D!

Hmm, I'll have a think about that one! Although, I'm not sure I'd want to spend my last days in prison. Yikes:O!

I do love carrots and if I we're to die at 65 that would put me smack in the middle of life right now. Hmmm. I don't want to be too old. I may just pick option 1. Why can't I make a frigging decision?

I really appreciate that there's only three choices. If there were four or more my mind would have been blown and that would have solved the decision dilemma that I'm currently facing. :) especially if a choice was pineapple.

If I find out I'll die on my 65th birthday, and on no other date, that must mean I am immortal until my 65th birthday.

I'd choose option 1. It's good to know. If I was given the chance to know I'd always regret not taking it. I could say a lot more but I don't really want to. Knowing seems the obvious choice for me though.

I'm not sure if I understand one little bit though. Will you die at the same time regardless of which option you pick? It's probably quite obvious but I wasn't entirely sure even after I reread the question :)

This question seems very Terry Pratchett-esque, by the way ^_^ That's a good thing of course :)

    • Interesting question, and one I didn't put much thought into. When I wrote this, it was to be:

Option 1: You are setting the deadline, it won't change, it's fixed.
Option 2: You have no choice in the matter, you could die when you're 65 or when you're 34.

You make a good point, though. I didn't put enough thought into that aspect. I imagine there are lots of holes in this story, but I'm new to this posting thing:P!

And thanks for the compliment (I think?). I've never read any of Pratchett's work, unfortunately, so I don't know what to think of that:P!

If I was setting the deadline, I'd just give myself like 500 years and be done with it.

        • Haha, don't use my words against me, that's not what I meant:O! You don't get to choose the date of the deadline, you only choose whether you want it or not:P.

I love Terry Pratchett, and one of my favourite characters he uses is Death. I think that's what made me think of him :) It's a compliment ^_^

In that case, I choose the carrot. I will give it to Death in a bad attempt at bribing him to give me more time <_<

        • Well, then thank you very much:D.

Ah, wise choice! I hear Death is very fond of carrots. He loves his Vitamin A, does Death:P!

And if the bribery doesn't work then you can always just throw it off him then make your getaway while he's distracted:P.

I wouldn't want to know at 60 that I only had 5 years left.

    Option 2.
I'm not worried about when I will die. With either option, I'm going to die, so why give myself the chance to lament the inevitable? Why should I give myself a reason to think about what I can't change? To prepare for it? I won't be able to afford life insurance for another few years, anyway. I'm in good health without any serious illnesses in my family and assuming that something tragic doesn't happen to me, I will probably live longer than 65.

After making my choice, I'd invite the guy in for a toke and some dinner, listen to some cool stories and send his ass on his way. See ya when I see ya, bro.
