Is it normal certain songs are too painful to listen to?

Some songs have particular melodies and or lyrics that strike a certain nerve within me, they trigger a very intense painful feeling.

Example: I have avoided listening to Dashboard Confessional's song "Stolen" for months, but before I knew what I was doing, I started listening to it on Youtube:
"We watch the season pull up its own stakes
And catch the last weekend of the last week
Before the gold and the glimmer have been replaced,
Another sun soaked season fades away"
And it felt like something almost physical (but mostly mental) was "welling up" inside me and I actually started crying.

Another example: The Script's song "For the first time":
"We're smiling but we're close to tears, even after all these years....."

When there are lyrics in a song like this, they're often about topics like change, intense feelings and love. I haven't gone through a lot of these things, yet I still get intense feelings from the songs.
I usually only get the feeling for a few specific parts of the song, a specific combination of melody and lyrics.

Sounds like you've just gone through a break up and certain songs remind you of your ex. You will get over it in time.

Yes it's normal because songs are made to release a bout of intense feelings or inspiration, that is why so many of them are about love and breaking up and intense emotional events. I happen to be unable to listen to much music as we'll however mine stems from hsp or hypersensitivitive people who have a different nervous system and therefore take things in more intensely than others, so the music really effects me while others react strongly to only a couple songs or so. But anyhow, either way it's perfectly normal. Your just in tune with your emotions and that is a great thing to have in life.

This I can relate to, all too well. I am a very emotional person, I feel things very often and very strongly, and more times than I can count have I been moved to tears by a certain song because of the lyrics and the melody.
Music is art, and art is expression. It is supposed to make you feel something, a sad song would be pointless if it did not make people feel a certain way. If music was not supposed to make people feel anything, all of the music in this world would sound exactly the same, which would make it pointless. Trust me, this is nothing to be worried about.

"Tomorrow is another day" and "The Journey" also known as ("Who will rescue me?"). Both are from The Rescuers film.

There are some others which have reduced me to tears as well...

I still can't bring myself to listen to after the storm by mumford and sons or you could be happy by snow patrol, too many memories.
I had this for the song Jesus Christ by brand new at one point but I love brand new and didn't want my listening to be affected so I listened to it on repeat until I didn't have an association with it anymore
