Is it normal ashamed to not be a math/physics/engineering person?

I'm at college and planning to major in biology. But whenever I hear about anyone being a math/physics/engineering major (or worse...a double major, like math&physics) or having a phD in those topics, or working in that industry, I feel ashamed of myself...for not being that intelligent. I feel like I am a waste of space and want to "crawl into a hole" (sorry for the cliché).

Is it normal to feel this inferior and pathetic over this?

You can be just as smart as them, and their subject isn't the only discipline that is worthwhile. Biology is a great subject. You've got your fingers lots of different pies. Biology gets a piece of psychology, and medicine, and pharmacy, and sexology, and chemistry, and veterinary studies, and sports science and so much more. Not only that, but you also get abstract theories and concepts like evolution and cell division and photosynthesis. As a subject, biology is a really good mix of practical knowledge and abstract though. Maths is limited because it's almost exclusively abstract thought, whereas you get a balance. Your subject requires different subtleties and other sophisticated ways of thinking. Biology is applicable in some way to almost every natural science and social science, which gives it a lot of value.

Every subject is valuable. Have confidence about your subject, and love it or there's no point studying it. Education isn't about flexing your intelligence or showing off or bragging about achievements, it's about broadening your mind and expanding the total sum of human knowledge.

Don't feel ashamed. Just because they are pursuing these degrees and/or are double majoring, doesn't mean that you aren't as smart as them. The fact that you got into college shows that you must be intelligent.

There are many college that now suggest students to double major and sometimes even to triple major. Doing this is suppose to give the student a double edge when they apply for a a job in those perspective fields. Now, if I am remembering correctly, multiple majoring takes a lot of time and money.

This is nothing to feel bad about, biology is a respectable subject. I'm doing psychology next year (hopefully) and I'm already getting slagged off about doing a "pseudo science" by friends and relatives. Your subject, on the other hand, is in the Science Museum and recognised as real, you should rejoice!

It's normal to want to be as successful as your parents.

People are good at different things. There isn't automatically one thing that's the best, and everything else is easier or substandard.

Humans are lazy and go for what is easiest for them. People who do math, physic, and engineeringses are just choosing their own easy option.

It is, but don't pay it any mind. I am currently at a tech school with engineering majors of all types and many scientific ones as well. I am part of the 2 % of the student body studying Architecture. I've even had people tell me that "you're not smart" once they realize what my major is. It doesn't matter, all that matters is if you enjoy what you are doing, then intelligence is a mere statistic. My passion for my work has made me outshine others far more intelligent than me who breeze through their math/science courses.

I wouldn't worry about it, dude. Everyone has their own strengths. I'm a digital arts major so I'm probably better in that area than other peeps and I'm pretty sure there's atleast some use for peeps like me in this world.

  • No way in hell. I freaking hate math and physics with a raging fiery passion. While its cool they do that, I dont feel inferior, because I am strong in other areas that they are not.

When I was in college, all my friends were Bio Engineers and I was the only Mechanical Engineer. I felt bad because I though they had WAY HARDER courses.
