Is it normal applesauce?

I recently opened a can of applesauce... it doesn't have an experation date on the can and it seemed pretty generic (white lable with a picture of an apple on it). So after some struggle with a stubborn can opener I cracked the lid to find a thick brown substance. In my experience it's usually yellow and a tad runny but then again I've never had canned applesauce before...

The main thing I'm trying to find out here? is it normal and should I still pack it in my kids lunch tomorrow?

I have never seen applesauce come in a can. That would deter me.

Perhaps what you got was actually pie filling not applesauce. The filling they put in pie sometimes will appear to be like a sauce but its darker.

If she has to buy generic brands she might not be able to afford fruit in its natural form.

Applesauce is supposed to have a light yellow colour to it and maybe even a few hint of caramel. Have you smelled this substance? Does it smell off? It could be that it fermented. You might want to look up health/safety regulations for generic foods.

Should you put it into your kids lunch? I don't know, but I think you should play it safe for now and use something else.

It's a possibility but for the consistency to match up it would have to be diarrhea. The thing is diarrhea and its relatives tend to smell godawful so, unless the OP has something wrong with her sense of smell, I don't see how she wouldn't be able to smell it.
