Is it normal...the smell of someones house

Have you ever noticed that everyones house has a unique smell to it? Maybe I'm just weird lol but I love walking into other peoples homes and wafting in the wonderful scent in there home. This only applies to clean homes of course, but all the smells are unique and vary by house. Am I a crack pot or is this normal :(?

I do that all the time. Occasionally I get a waft of something and am reminded of a house from my childhood. My aunt's house always smelled like pine and breakfast cereal and my grandmother's lavender and mentholated soap.

What's really weird is if you go on holiday for two weeks, you notice your own house has a smell too, when you get back.

Yes, it is part of that interesting collection of foods, hobbies, colognes, and everything that makes us human. Each home is its own puzzle really, all of the cumulative effects coming together with one scent. Great topic, very interesting.

  • Yea. I do the same. Clean homes, of course.

The olfactory sense is among the more powerful in us, especially when it comes to being a memory-trigger. Semi recent studies into smells have almost definitely linked smell with deja-vu; that sense we've been somewhere before, or done something before, even if we know we haven't.

For example: There might be a smell memory of "grandma's house" locked away in memory, and when we enter another building, perhaps we pick this up, and it feels like we've been there before, even though we can't articulate why. Make sense?

Anyhow. Smell's crucial for us, and I smell things constantly. Uh, clean things, to be sure. :P

I can't stand the smell of other people's houses to be completely honest. I feel dirty the whole entire time.

A few years ago when I was househunting with my then 7yr old son, he would like or reject a house based solely on its smell.

It makes me enjoy yet another similarity humans have to wild animals.

I'm always paranoid that my house smells. I often wonder if others can smell anything offensive. I've even asked friends if they can smell anything bad, but they usually say no. But, of coarse I think they're just being polite. I guess all I can do is clean as much as I can.

BTW, have any of you IIN readers ever come across this carpet cleaner powder stuff? I swear to God, IT SMELL LIKE CAT PISS! I smelled it in houses that have NO ANIMALS. It's an extremely, flowery perfumed carpet cleaning powder that really annoys me.

^^^ I love the smell of hotel rooms too! I like the smell of other peoples houses also. Not the smoky nasty kind but like clean and just smelly good. Everytime I walk into my neighbors house it always smells good like cinnamon...I always tell her I love the smell of her house. She's never seemed weirded out or anything..I think its pretty common.

Totally normal. The first time I ever went into a Bath and Body Works, I found it smelled just like my aunts house, which carried fond memories :) Or a certain lavender/mentholated smell like someone mentioned earlier reminds me of my great grandmas house. And again, like someone else said, walking into your own home after you've been gone on vacation is great too :)
I personally like the smell of hotel rooms..haha

Once I went into a house that was very old and bright and sunny and it smelled like lemon and vanilla and I always wondered how that came about.maybe it was the furniture polish?

I moved to a new region when I was 16 and the new house smelled of other people. It wasn't bad, just not mine. The house never felt like home because of this alien smell. 10 years later, it still smelled of a strange family.

    ^ ha!
I love coming back from vacations to smell my home. So weird. But it's the scent other people link me to. It's almost comforting to know you have your own smell.
