Is it normal -- gift registry for 3-y/o birthday party?

My 3 Y/O daughter just received an invitation to a friend's 3rd birthday party. Included inside was a gift registry card for a toy store located about 10-15 min. from my house. I am sure it is much more expensive than my usual go-to place for birthday gifts --Target. I am really appalled. Is this a new normal? I refuse to shop there for a gift. Actually, I find it so presumptuous that I almost don't want to take my daughter to the party at all. Thoughts?

thats just ridiculous! i would feel the same way if i were you. they are 3, they arent getting married or anything like that and those toys are only going to get thrown away in a few years. just get a toy from your usual shopping place and if they dont like it well tell them to stick it.

If I were you I'd hire a stripper. They make excellent birthday presents.

I guess I've always interpreted gift registries as suggestions and that just because someone uses a registry doesn't mean you are required to purchase from it. I registered for gifts for my baby shower and only a couple people used it.

I'd like to offer a different viewpoint on this... I used to work at a place called Learning Express Toys, and we had a gift registry called "birthday boxes". The kid gets to walk around and pick out all the stuff they would like and the prices for the items they typically pick all range from $5 - $50, but usually they pick more $10-$20 items. It let's the child have that fun special experience and it actually makes your job easier cause you already know they'll like your gift. They also put the actual toys they picked out, in the same "birthday box" and are basically put on hold especially for the guests of the party.
We also offered free gift wrapping. Total timesaver.

Just something to think about. Great last minute thing :)

How silly and snobbish they are being!
They are teaching their kids to be greedy and rude. It's one thing if the gift registry is for a wedding, but even at that I don't really like the concept. Unfortunately, the parents are in control here. There's the risk if you don't play by their "rules" that your kid could be excluded from the others or you could be looked down on. Honestly, what ever happened to the usual "traditions" for buying presents? Enough of this bullshit!

I agree it's ridiculous but dont make your daughter or her friend miss out on a fun expeirience because of selfish parents. Buy her something cute, from whatever store and whatever price your comfortable with, she is THREE, and will be so infatuated with sugar, friends and presents she wouldnt even notice if you got her nothing. If the parents say anything tell them to suck it. Not normal.

It is a bit stuck-upish! I would take my child to the party because I don't think it was the 3 year olds idea to register for the party! Just go to the registry online and pick out a toy that they also sell at Target and purchase it at Target. That way the birthday child gets the toy they want, your child gets to go to the party and you save some money!!

Yeah, I still think it's inappropriate. Thanks for all your responses. It's not challenging to pick out a toy a 3yo will like. I can't imagine, as a mom, picking out a list of toys I want for my child and then asking my child's friend's parent to go to that store and buy that specific item.... I don't know this woman that well. I really, really love to give gifts -- I love the whole process -- but this grosses me out.
