My girlfriend and I get really annoyed with some of the posts on this site. It appears that circa 80% of them are written by illiterate idiots. It's humorous in a way but we both worry for the prospects of people who have no grasp of basic English concepts. Is this normal?
True enough. You can often tell when someone is mentally translating from another language and I make a conscious effort to use standard English and no nuance when replying.
The OP is probably talking about a lack of care though. What worries me is when I see CVs written that way and then people wonder why they're less employable. Spellcheck is actually making the problem worse, I think. It's why I never use it (and also why my posts often contain mistakes).

You and your girlfriend should get off your high horse and stop being so uptight. People make mistakes, BIG WOW! But it does take a real asshole to point them out.
You have no idea where all of these people are from. Some people weren't as fortunate to get a well education as others might have. Each country is different in that department.
You and your girlfriend can take your nose and stick it elsewhere. If you don't like to see the mistakes don't come on the site. Simple as that.

My friend is miserable at grammar and spelling. On facebook, she will misspell really simple words and make herself look stupid. What actually pisses me off though is incorrect grammar. I will proof read a peer's paper and their sentences just don't flow and it's like...are you fucking retarded? why the hell would you put a period there?! What gets me is the wrong form of "your" or "there." People always say "your so pretty" instead of "you're" or something like on a picture of someone on facebook and I get so annoyed. It's like I want to yell at them and change it. You are past 5th grade, learn how to use grammar correctly! It's really not that hard.
lol i also get mad when people misspell, but i hate it when they do it purposely with capitalized letters and replacing some letters with numbers. the only thing i do, which i don't think bothers anyone, is not capitalize letters or names that should. this is only because i get lazy to push the 'shift' button x)

Fair point on English not being a first language for some users and a typo is obviously just a typo. Unfortunately, I'm fairly sure that a lot of the poorly written posts I see are made by native English speakers who just aren't trying. Or worse still, don't know any better...
My main concern is that the schooling system is failing our youth. I agree that correct spelling is not the sole indicator of intelligence and that intelligence can take many forms but a lot of kids seem indifferent to, or actually look down on being intelligent.
For the poor few who pointed out my mistakes in the post title: make an effort to develop your sense of satire!
For some, English is not their first language....I agree, it can be frustrating when people don't check grammar or spelling but it isn't anything to lose sleep over.

Okay, I'm sorry. I know I have bad grammar, I always leave out words, I never use proper capitalization and my spelling skills are on par with a third grader. I usually use an iPhone when I'm commenting on this site, but that is no excuse. I'm lazy, I'll admit it. I promise I will put forth more of an effort to double check my comments before posting them ... at least for the rest of the day.

Organize INN spelling bee competition and restrict the access to this site for first 10 positions only. Performe it daily and you will be very happy! You could also hide misspelled post or just don't read it!
Just as long as it's not too difficult to understand, it doesn't bother me. I'll make a joke here and there just for fun, but nobody's perfect really.
The ones that spell it "really" are correct. You see the pronunciation of the word is found in its spelling.
That is fucking dumb for eighteen reasons, only three of which I will discuss.
First off, how is "really" easier to pronounce than "rly", and secondly, why would that necessarily make it correct? There are plenty of terms with difficult or confusing pronunciation. English diction is impractical and illogical. See: pronunciation of the terms "tough/bough/though/through" "reign" "daiquiri" "colonelcy" "disciple" "aisle" and 99% of ALL WORDS. And don't tell me that it's because those words come from other languages, because guess what - ALL OF THEM DO.
Finally, to reject an evolution of a word with an argument that boils down to "because that's how we spell it" ignores the fact that English in its modern form would be completely alien to anyone several centuries years back, let alone millennia.
