Is it normal 21 and not allowed to spend the night with my boyfriend

I'm 21 and I've been in a relationship for close to 2 years. My parents like and approve of my boyfriend but won't allow me to sleep overnight at his place as long as I live under their roof. I'm a good person and I've never been arrested or anything like that. My parents already know we have sex so staying over wouldn't make any difference. Whenever anyone finds out about this they make it seem like I'm sheltered. I'm not the type of person to disobey my parents, but I'm just curious about the normality of the situation.

Sounds like a power trip by your parents; quite incomprehensible. Have you tried taking to them; questioning their reasons?
I'm glad you don't lie to them saying you are staying w/ a gf or something, because that would be wrong, but I'm with those above; it's time to move out.
It's YOUR life, live is as YOU see fit. Perhaps the threat of moving out will get them to reassess things?

Well if they know you are having sex anyway, I don't know what difference it makes. That being said if you don't like their rules, move out.

I suppose it is pretty common.

The way I see it is you're 21 and you can do what you want.

The way I see it is she is still dependent on her parents, for at least housing, if not money too.

IF she wants to do her own thing, then move out and get independent for her folks

Ha I'm 24 and if I still lived with my parents, they'd say the same thing. Thankfully I moved out at 18 and now am 2000 miles away. I do what I want :) It's not an ideal situation for a 21 year old but it's not easy to make it on your own. Hang in there!

It's about respecting their values and their rules. As long as you live under their roof...

I don't think it's normal at all (My parents let me sleep over at my boyfriend's from the age of 17) but I also don't think it's totally uncommon. It's usually religious families or strict parents who shelter their children who do this.

  • You're old enough to live on your own and make your own rules...but living rent free in someone's home subjects you to their conditions. Especially if it comes from people with many more years of life experience, who love you, and have your interests at heart.

If you want freedom...you're 21; move out and live as you choose.
