I was always told that in doing so will not hurt you. The brain is designed to shut down so it will breath again. It is a safety feature so nothing will get damaged.
I heard that Navy Seals go through something similar to this as part of their training.
The reason you fall unconscious is a safety mechanism so that you will start breathing again. Brain cells are damaged by a lack of oxygen, probably not from holding your own breathe but it isn't worth the risk. If the brain doesn't get oxygen for about 6 minitues it will die.
Cant remember if it was this or something else but something about making yourself unconcious that could cause severe brain damage and kill you i cant remember what it was though only that it was not some drug...
This is what my friends did at school:
One person would hold their breath for a while
Then the other person would push/pump their heart area really hard after the person holds their breath after like 30 seconds. This leads to them passing out of course. I always wanted to try it but I was too scared at that time...if given the opportunity again I might just do it.
