Is it common to lack compassion?

my oldest son 12years and his father lack total compassion, they just seem to be totally unaware to a persons pain and suffering, but then at times they are very aware of everybody elses friends or people they meet, however their brother and son and me they seem to have no compassion.
i have recently had a bad car accident neither of them would even consider the fact that i was to ill to cook dinner or get up to do the washing or take the kids to school in the morning another example being my youngest son 8yrs broke his arm last week and his dad and his brother just have no compassion at all and dont help him do anything such as- going to the toilet pouring a drink getting in the car and many other things but dad and oldest son just seem completly unaware almost like they dont even care
is this normal?

I am so sorry that you have to endure this hardship. It stinks when people who are Narcissistic and don't know it behave this way. My oldest stepson is also this way. Everything is "Me, me, me" in His world when it suits him. If he wants something or needs something it's a different story. You should stop doing their laundry, preparing their meals etc... and see what happens. Tell them that until they start helping out more you are on strike! Maybe if they have to do some or all of what you do for them they will learn to have a greater appreciation for you! Most narcissistic personalities don't change, they get worse with age. I wish you luck and put your foot down and make them see what it's like to take care of themselves for a while!

It sounds like a cross between lack of compassion and laziness. Either way, they need a kick up the arse.
