Is it common for letters to get lost/discarded in the us?

No it isn't common. Obviously mistakes happen in a system that large, but the mail service is pretty dependable. Depending on where it was sent from and were it was going, most out of state letters will take 2 to 4 days for delivery. If your letter was mailed on Monday, which was a national holiday, it would have been picked up on Tuesday. That means it will likely get delivery today, tomorrow, or Saturday. If you mail things to that address a lot and it didn't arrive as fast as it normally does and that is why you are concerned, that Monday holiday could be the reason.

As far as I know, I've never sent (or been sent) a letter that didn't arrive. Letters sent to a local address almost always used to arrive the next delivery day; past few years I've noticed local delivery sometimes takes two days instead of one. But they do arrive.
