Is it a compliment or an insult?

People often tell me that i am better then what they first thought of me. Or they did not expect me to be this good at particular task. Or i give a bad first impression compared to what i am capable of doing.
But yesterday it was repeated thrice by a person in uni. I was a bit shocked when that person said it, but i did not know how to take it because that person was smiling and trying put it out like a praise.
Now should i take that as a insult or compliment?

    Sounds like people underestimate you

Dont worry about it. Let people have their opinions. Just be you

I've gotten underestimated. I dont care haha

    It's an insult.

They think they're complimenting you, but it's just a nice way of saying, "Wow, I thought you were going to be a piece of shit, but you proved me wrong!"

You must have shown something that made them think that. Otherwise they don't. For example if you wear a nice business suit, comb your hair properly and all that, everyone will admire you ( or jealous, it's just people ). But... If you wear a torn t-shirt with sandals to an office, they'll think you're a pathetic loser. It's common

Depends how they say it, I suppose. If they have a sarcastic and smug tone it obviously is an insult, but if there is genuine surprise in their voice it is a compliment.

Generally when people throw positive words like "good", "better" and such it is a compliment.

I would ignore it even if they were being 'smart' . Take it with a grain of salt and don't worry about it. It really is a hard situation to judge though without context and tone. You are the best person naturally to discern these nuances because you were there. Repeating something 3 times as you state above does sound a little strange or it might of been completely innocent. Ultimately, just do your best in life and use your own intelligence to judge what's really going on.

The first thing to point out is that first impressions are almost entirely physical. If you're a girl and you're attractive, you might come off as a bimbo.

Otherwise, it's likely you're unattractive—people think less of ugly people. It's not right but it is reality.
