Is gaydar a real thing?

So occasionally I might come across a tv show or a place and say "This is gay or feels really queer". Its not even specifically being more or less fem or masculine either. I remember watching degrassi and I was 11 and I just said "Wow everyone in this show just seems really gay". I couldn't even describe why either. Just it felt like a gay show. Another show I love and well i also love batman, is gotham but honestly its written like a fanfiction and even without the riddler/penguin love plot I wouldn't disagree with anyone who says its a kinda gay show. With people I think certain mannerisms might feel queer. Even if say the person isn't gay they might have mannerisms that present that way. In fandom there also this debate about what they call "queer coding". Like is this what they mean when they talk about gaydar?

  • Don't get me started on Gotham. Such a bullshit and campy show that I'd take Adam West's Batman over it.

But yeah, I'd say Gaydar is a legit thing.

    • I didn't really find Gotham campy. I mean adam west yes but Gotham seemed really dark.

I agree, “queer coding” should not be about stereotypes but flamboyance, meaningful looks, lingering touches and energy that transcends the platonic.

It’s a much better way of assessing whether a character could be queer or not than narrow-minded assumptions such as “he’s a guy who bakes cupcakes so he MUST be gay” or something about a woman’s practical clothes denoting she’s a lesbian.

You can usually tell when a guy is gay. The way they talk and mannerisms.

They have their very own dialect of English. Very interesting read on wikipedia.

      • If you mean the code they used in the 50s that derived from french slang that isn't really a dialect of English.

No I'm talking about the distinct gay lisp that is prominent enough through the homosexual community to warrent it being apart of a new dialect

          • Having a lisp is not a dialect and stating having a lisp indicates anything about sexuality or personality is discrimination

Not everything on wikipedia is legit I know but if a stereotype warrants a wikipedia entry it's probably worth talking about.

I actually somehow didn't know Batman was considered a gay show but I once had a gay coworker who told me that his significantly older partner (early 60s) was obsessed with Batman to the extent of sometimes wearing Batman underwear, which he found weird at first but eventually decided wasn't a big deal.

I would say gaydar can be real to an extent, just like people can be perceptive of all sorts of traits. I think I have BPD-dar.
