Is gangnam style's popularity normal?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0

The song is called Gangnam Style and the artist is called PSY.

I have liked K-Pop for a long time. I am happy that PSY is experiencing so much success but I am also unhappy because fans of K-Pop are not ready to share it with the general populace.

I have my opinion. I will share it at some point later on in the poll.

Baby, baby, not a moy joy I dont know what Im saying... gangnam style! 35

wtf kind of hipster bullshit is that? why don't they want others to be able to enjoy something that they love so much.

    • Well... because when something becomes mass produced it loses it's soul, because it becomes harshly critiqued, and browbeaten by the people that don't want it to be popular, because there will be idiots out there that will say they like it and they will have their own opinion on it as well as their own brand of it, which will mean that there will be people that will judge it and judge you when they don't know enough to judge, and there will be people that will make really bad jokes, t-shirts, parodies, etc.

For example, I watched a program critiquing K-Pop and a fan said that the idols are incredibly hard working. She said that about eight people live in one apartment, eat ramen for every meal if they even eat, work until they are exhausted, sacrifice being themselves for the sake of having a good image, sacrifice being in a relationship, would do almost anything for a fan, etc. Another woman on the show said that their image is luxe, futuristic, sophisticated, lavish, and that the South Korean idols are trying to show off how rich and sophisticated of a country South Korea is. I agree that the music videos appear this way, but I think that the idols are incredibly hard working. I didn't like to hear what she said. If K-Pop stays indie the majority of people won't even care enough to make a program talking about it.

This makes no sense and you're selfish for not wanting your favorite artists to reach some amount of real success

        • It makes no sense that you'd say they haven't reached any amount of real success if they aren't popular in America as well as the rest of the world. In Korea alone they make millions of dollars. I'd call that successful.

Its Korean pop. Much of Asian culture has become popular world wide. They have a very unique style and culture. The styles they have also pop and are very notable. So it attracts children. Since kids like bright and big colourful. So it attract teens and children. Most kids are attracted to this no matter what culture. They also have an art style that many artists enjoy compared to some of the crude artwork of cartoons in other countries. As well as that they can make cartoons that are more complex, creative and deeper. So Of course it is normal. Asians are very interesting. If you think about it most races in this world are hated for something. The one area in this world most people seem to like it Asia.

You apparently do not know anything about Asia’s influence. Do you realize how popular it is? I mean they have it circulating in Australia, Canada, America and Britain. Have you ever heard of a weebo? Japanese culture has already flooded the markets. You try to act hip but you are just a fool. You try to act cool but you are not cool. This is old hat and you are acting like a snob. This fact shows you know nothing about the influence Asia has had on the world. You Also will notice they started putting Asian themes in places they do not belong. Kind of how the vampire has been tossed into everything. I hate it when things become mainstream myself if they are in a small area of the world but K-pop and all Asian themed things have been hitting it since 80-90 on. Let us be.

oOOOo noOoo, we must stop this criticism to be brought upon people who can't take it well, and care so much about what some ignorant dumb strangers who don't share the same taste in music say about it.. your statement makes no sense to me. 'hey, lets write some music just for hippies, but ONLY show it to the ones at hippie communes, so there will be no chance of someone critiquing it and making fun of us. what? they won't make as much money off it, and only a fraction of the world population will be able to hear and enjoy it? PRECISELY! keep it that way'.........

I've been familiar with Kpop for a while, so when Gangnam Style started becoming popular, it felt extremely bizarre to be hearing it everywhere. I think it's great how so many people like the song (and that dance), because music like this should be shared by everyone. I can understand Kpop fans being being possessive of 'their' music, but breaking into the American music market is what a lot of Kpop artists have tried (and failed) to do in the past. Psy's success should be celebrated, because he has done what no other Kpop artist has managed to do. What makes his success sweeter is that he didn't even intend for this song to become so popular internationally- it just happened.

the only reason it is as popular as it is is because people thought he was saying 'open condom style' and thats what made it viral. sure, some people actually like it but thats the only reason they ever even heard it in the first place

The video went viral = It's popularity has exceeded a normal level.

That song became so popular that even several local radio stations in South Africa are playing it. (I'm sure it's the first time they've played something that's not English or Afrikaans.)

Also, Is it not a good thing if more of the general populace become K-Pop fans through this?

I agree with you. I've been K-pop fan for like 5 years and everyone always laughed at me but now I see retards "dancing" Gangnam Style on street while babbling some shit pretending to sing Korean.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Imposturously_yours

It's not normal at all, but it's very expected.

It's has catchy melody "hooks', it doesn't really have any lyrics to remember, it has a signature dance, it doesn't take itself seriously (humor never hurts), and it has a bunch of cute asian girls in it.

Seriously, if you want something to go viral and market to the masses -it has everything the masses might want.

I wouldn't call it music, though.

I'm so tired of hearing about this. I admit at first I liked it. Then it got overused and so overplayed.

I also admit I've known about k-pop for awhile simply because I have friends who are obsessed with k-pop, j-pop and what not. I'm actually glad that someone from clear over there can become so popular in the US and it's cool that a new genre is introduced to a lot of new people. For someone that like to become famous here must be tickled pink, but the song got old quick.

It's a one-off viral success in my opinion. The song isn't representative of K-Pop, it's more like a French House track with a little bit of Korean thrown in and a fun video, not the typical Korean experience.

I think, OP, you don't have to worry too much about other people taking away your coveted subculture and K-Pop becoming mainstream because of Gangnam Style.
