Is "cute" a real complement?

Whenever a girl sees a picture of me they call me cute. Not just one or two people, but every single girl! Never hot, or sexy, or attractive, or anything else, just "cute". Are they just patronizing me? Are they just trying to say something nice so I won't feel bad?

I always say that to guys when I like them. I tell them they're really cute and I only rarely use the word handsome. It's not the same as when I talk about a kitten or something. You should take it as a compliment.

Handsome is too formal, and kind of old-fashioned.

Cute can come off as emasculating, however. I don't get girls who have an obsession with this word. My girlfriend uses it often, much to my irritation...

Now I'll feel self-conscious when I use it :/ What word do men prefer?

Pretty much any other word that describes what it means to you when you say the word 'cute' to a guy. Even 'handsome,' old fashioned though it may be, is still a better alternative. Lol.

        • It is a bit emasculating, but I'm fine with it I guess. It's just that it's all people say so I was a little suspicious of weather or not it was a real complement.

  • Usually, yes, from what I've observed. Girls have this weird thing where "cute" doesn't mean the same thing as a cute puppy or something. Whenever a girl I knew "liked" someone they would usually either say he's hot or he's cute, sometimes both at different times.

I like to call my bf cute and cuddly, cause I feel that he has facial features that make him look lika cute kissable soft toy... that aside being sexy isn't all that grand, it means you're putting too much out. Cute is a loving description.

I don't think you can take "cute" seriously when you're talking about showing girls your pic on the internet. Think about it. If you met a normal, well-adjusted girl online, and she thought you were charming and sweet, and you decided to trade face pics, what could she possibly say to you if she didn't think you were the least bit attractive? She'd never tell you she thought you were ugly, she'd have to say something nice, but not nice enough to make you think she was leading you on. That rules out handsome, sexy, and hot. She'd only use those words if she actually found you attractive. That leaves either "cute" or "good looking" and most girls will choose "cute" every time, because it sounds slightly disrespectful at the same time as being complimentary.

Hot girls will often call a dork "cute" to avoid totally crushing him while rejecting him; as in: "you're cute and all, but you're just not my type". On the other hand, some girls never compliment a guy's looks without using the word "cute". It's the only word in their repertoire. They don't feel comfortable using "hot" or "sexy" because that makes them sound slutty or desperate. They don't use "handsome" because it sounds too formal or old-fashioned.

The bottom line is, you might as well treat the word "cute" as meaningless/ambiguous, because you'll never know for sure if she's using it in a condescending, neutral, or genuine way. (Technically, she could even think you're totally gorgeous and out of her league but be too vain and insecure to let you know.) Of course, it's better than an insult, but it doesn't tell you very much. I'd say your best clue is if she goes into more detail about your specific features. If she says "you're cute" and leaves it at that, that doesn't bode as well as if she says, for example, "you're so cute, I LOVE your hair" or "Cute! Nice eyes!". You can't even fully trust these, but they're a safer bet than "cute" singularly followed by an abrupt change of subject.

Of course, if she texts you again, she obviously meant it.

If you are an adult guy, then I wouldn't consider 'cute' a very flattering compliment.

In my experience, "cute" IS a compliment. It's normally associated with someone who is youthful, pretty with a vibe of sweet. Also, the person delivering said comment may not know you too well but they feel you are attractive from what they see. If the circumstances presented, he (assuming a male said a female was "cute") would certainly be willing to chat with the girl. If chemistry existed, the "cute" factor will always remain & will grow. (Again cute IS good) If girl says guy is "cute" she thinks he has a boyish, handsome face and if she were single she would give her number to him if he asked....................At least that's how I see it.

I love cute! If someone is handsome I think he needs to be cute too. I don't like just staight up sexy without any cute or real solid handsome. For instance I'm not attracted to male porn stars or strippers.
