Is commercial egg white safe to eat raw?

Is like to add egg whites to my smoothies because I don't like dairy protein powder. They sell pasteurized egg whites at the store like Eggbeaters. Are these safe to eat without cooking?

I've been eating raw eggs in smoothies for about 40 years and they've never made me sick. That included eggs from my own chooks, free range direct from the farm and free range from the health food store or supermarket.

What is this issue with raw egg white?

I once read somewhere that the avidin in the eggs prevents biotin from being absorbed into the body. You should probably cook them first.

The only raw eggs I've ever eaten have been Meringue and even then, I was still scared of Salmonella. I don't think that you should be eating eggs Raw. I often wonder how body builders eat raw eggs and don't get sick.

Meringue is cooked egg white & sugar, that's why it's dry & crunchy and raw egg white is runny and clear.

Did you really think meringue wasn't cooked?

My mother never cooked hers. She told me that meringue could only be raw, which is why I was always paranoid of getting salmonella. I've seen cooking shows where the contestants never seem to cook their egg whites and no one complains about the risks. Could this perhaps be a technique that varies by country?

Well maybe but I don't see how you could eat a mixture of raw egg white & sugar? Surely it'd be liquid? Anyway it sounds really yuk, I've never heard of it and a quick check on google has lots of recipes which begin with instructions to preheat the oven.

So how would you make meringue?
