Is alternative rock songs meaned as sad music? Songs of alternative rock bands as OneRepublic, Coldplay and Imagine Dragons?

      Yeah... if bands like Coldplay and U2 are "alternative rock", is there any such thing as "mainstream rock"? :P It's a counter-intuitive use of words.

    It depends on the listener, it depends on the band and it depends on the song. To me, "Viva la Vida" by Coldplay is quite an upbeat song whereas "Fix You" is distinctively mournful. "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons isn't a happy or a sad song to me; it's energetic without a prescribed emotional direction.

    Modern alternative rock is characterised by a defiant, dominant attitude and which isn't limited to either upbeat or downbeat songs. Alternative rock is an exceptionally broad church, so it's really hard to say anything monolithic about it.
