Is a dollar per each 5-8 dollar drink a good tip? (alcohol)

I usually give a dollar for every drink I order at the bar($5-$8). I see that everyone tips differently. Some people don't tip at all.

Additional information: If I'm planning on getting drunk, I bring $40(I buy other people's drinks with it too, or else this lightweight gets tanked). Whatever is left at the end(usually under 5 bucks) I leave for the person that served me most. So they make out with a good eight bucks off me(Out of $40). More or less.

Is a dollar per drink a good tip?
(I don't believe the last option, just thought I should throw it in there)

Yes, that's a good tip. 161

I take a lot into consideration when tipping at bars. If my drinks are being served in glasses and not shitty plastic cups and little mouthwash plastic cups for shots that means ill tip better. If the bar is packed and I'm getting served in a reasonable manner ill tip on account of good service. I really don't like tipping for beer every time especially if I'm just being handed a bottle. I always tip on any kind of mix drink 2-3 dollars. I don't tip female bartenders any different then male bartenders no matter how hard they try to charm me. If the drinks are fairly priced I tip better. I guess thats the gist of what I do

It depends on what kind of service you want.

If you're in a place where you plan to be a regular and really want to build a good relationship with the bartender, try increasing your tips.

    At least $2.

And if you REALLY want to be a shining star in the bar, match your tip to your drink price. So if you get at $5 drink, put $5 in the jar. As you say "thank you"

sure you won't be able to afford as many drinks but you may find that they're a more generous in what they pour. so it works out and everyone's happy. :-)

(one of my supervisors use to do that to get extra strong drinks at military functions... big tips, saying "thank you", and suddenly he was being served doubles for the price of singles etc)

Boo!! Bad answer. Ass-kissing doesn't make up for personality. Be nice, be friendly and tip a normal amount based on the comlexity of the drink. The bartender will appreciate it just fine. Tipping excesssively has it's drawbacks. Trust me.

Just tip appropriately, every time you're served, for the type of drink you're served. The bartender will notice. No need to be flashy, that can be a big turn-off or annoyance....some people who do that tend to think they're 'above' everyone else in the bar and that's not so.

A good bartender will serve everyone properly, tip or no tip. If you're getting shitty service, just leave....don't tip more.

        Boo back at you.

well obviously don't be a jerk even if you tip well. that's why i said using "thank you". no one likes serving entitlement whores, even if they're big tippers

That's what I was referring to....not necessary, and it will backfire. Firstly, the bartender is going to see you as their 'payday' and not so much as a friend or cool person. I'd do a heck of a lot more for a person who tipped properly and was cool, nice and polite over someone who thought they could buy service. Then what happens on nights when you're short on cash, and you don't tip like usual? The bartender starts to think 'well, the money's dried up, so fuck this guy...' Just tip normal and avoid all that. Nobody likes an ass kisser.

true a good worker will always finish strong, but the fact is, if your known to over tip, you get taken care of. when you go to a place you should always try to get the same server or bartender. It works out for both parties.

True fact, When i worked at Ihop, people that i knew over tipped always got extra things under the counter. You treat your service well, your service will hook you up. did it for people countless times. These two drunk guys would come in at 3:20 every Saturday morning, and would tip 40 bucks, i would split it with the manager and tell him there drinks were free and that they wanted there usual (which always came with 2 extra eggs and a stupid amount of hashbrowns)

I was a bartender for YEARS....a dollar is a good tip for a beer. If it's a mixed drink, then it kinda depends on the complexity. If it's just a Jack and Coke, or a simple one-liquor shot, then probably a dollar or 2 per drink, but if I have to mix more than 3 or 4 ingredients, then $3. If it's a fucking frozen margarita where I gotta get out the blender, the you better tip more like $4 each drink.

I always treated everyone the same service-wise whether they tipped or not, however I'd do special favors for people who tipped well (free drink or free songs on the juke, whatever). The worst thing I ever did to a customer who was a pain in my ass and didn't tip at all, was lied to her and told her I already closed out the register and couldn't sell her another drink (technically I had about 5 min to last call)...but fuck that cunt, she was nasty and didn't tip, and she wants me to make her another drink when I'm about to get to go home?? Ha.

Oh...ha, yes, I almost forgot! There was a regular customer, every day he'd come in and have a few vodka and Sprites. He NEVER left a tip, he'd always leave the swizzle sticks there as if that was my tip. I hated that prick but he never knew it, I always served him with a smile. Then one day, I look over, his glass was empty, he was gone, and there was $2 on the bar. I thought, holy fucking shit he tipped me!!! But, nope, turns out he had just gone out to the parking lot for some reason. He asked where his $2 went and I told him I thought he'd left and that it was a tip. He laughed and laughed, as if how dare I even think he'd EVER leave a tip....and I had to take the $2 out of my tips and get him his drink. What a fucking prick. Not only didn't he tip but it was like he took pleasure in getting served and not tipping. I never treated him differently, I just made fun of him whenever he left.

Heh, well I loved the job, and I learned quick how to deal with people. I know, it doesn't seem like I'm the type of person who wouldn't punch a guy in teh face because of how I am on here but really, I am fairly easygoing in real life. I certainly have my moments but when it comes to work I am always nothing but professional and exceptional!!

Indeed. I applaud you good madam.

A friend of mine once told me about the customers at his job with a fast food establishment. The insight he shared with me is that you have to learn not to let it phase you; the next customer will be the same way and there's nothing you can do about it.

The bartenders at my regular stop, I think, have goddammed little interest in getting to know me (they haven't spit in my glass yet!) but I tip $1 for every beer I get because I hated the customer service job that I used to have. I double tipped them last night, since they were doing their Christmas party, but that was just because they were doing their Christmas party.

Tipping doesn't make you friends with the bartender. It just means that they ask you whether you're ready for another drink. Or that they ask more often. In general they couldn't care less about whether you live or die, as long as you don't die on the property. The bartender will pour your drinks, but she/he is not your friend, canned greetings notwithstanding. Just drink your drink and don't make their shift any more difficult than it already is.

    Thanks for the feedback!

I'll probably begin tipping $2 on my $8 drink(Disaronno). My other drink is a shot of Rumple Minze $5(to get me drunk faster).

    Usually my night is:
    Buy a friend a drink(5+1), Disaronno(8+1), Rumple(5+1), Disaronno(8+1), Friend buys me a drink back, Rumple(5+1), Leave $2-4 additionally= $40

I used to go out to karaoke weekly. I haven't been out to the bar for months. I'll be living above a bar in less than a week. I was thinking of stopping in on paydays(my equivalent of Friday) for a drink to kick off my 2 days off/lay my week to rest. I work at night, so I'd be catching the bar for a drink(my $8) before heading in.

I just didn't feel like leaving a single dollar, if I were to get one drink. Seems like I'd be jipping them, because they won't get to snowball tips off of me. It would be like getting someone's hopes up to make some extra cash, then I drop a dollar and leave after one drink.

    Thanks again!

ehhhhh..... It isn't terrible by any sense of the word. I usually leave at least 2 bucks per drink, as i have been a server and a bartender and know what its like, a lot of chumps won't even tip, so i try to compensate for the assholes who leave shitty/no tips. Less i was ignored the whole damn time. I guess the point for me is the service, If my bartender is clever, quick, and clean cut, it isn't unusual for me to tip a 20 on 2 drinks.

Usually I'll tip between 2 and 5 dollars no matter what. Sometimes I'll be standing there FOREVER, I won't tip then. Only if i'm certain they've seen me there though.

I have a habit of being courteous lol I'll say "please" and "thank you". They seem to appreciate that.

I think you're tipping fairly coz I used to work in a bar too. I go to the same pub every weekend and I always tip the bar staff with my change.

If it's one of their birthdays or I haven't seen a particular member of staff for a while, I will say, "Get yourself a drink!" Then they can take the value of whatever they drink. I have never checked how much any of them have ever taken.

When I worked in a bar an extremely rich man made a whole exhibition in front of his friends by putting a tip into my hand. It was 10 cents!! I threw back my head and started to laugh! Then proceded to throw it in the charity tin when his mates were watching me!! Ignorant b@stard!!

OMG, one time the bar I worked at held a large function in the banquet hall. One of the attendees was a local doctor. SO I KNOW he has money, he has to....he orders 2 double shots of Tangueray gin. He gives me $10 for it as if that should cover it and actually thought he was going to get change. The cost of the drinks should've been about $16. I was just stunned....I just gave him the drinks for the $10 and didn't say anything.....it was so busy that day due to the function, I didn't have a second to spare so I let it go. It kinda sucked because I was the only bartender when they had functions, so I'd be unbelievably busy!! But I liked it, usually made good tips but it was hard work!! VERY hard!!

Where I'm from, the UK, all 'servers' (we call them bar staff) make at least minimum wage, that's £6.08 (US $9.55) for 21 and over, between 18 and 21 they get at least £4.98 (US $7.82). Of course they get a share of the tips on top of that.

Why should I tip? I don't tip the bus driver, I don't tip the bin men, I don't tip the postmen, I don't tip doctors or nurses - do you? So why should I tip someone who's getting paid to serve me? You're right, it's a job - not a charity.

        "punkass". Sad...
