Is a 14 year old to old to be spanked

Oh and some food for thought. My stepdad "spanked" me (hit me on the head with one finger until I would cry) until the age of 16. So guess what I did as an adult when I would get mad at my husband - and later, my boyfriends?? Yep. You guessed it. I hit them. Took a long time to see I had become abusive because I was abused. They are teaching her to be an abuser instead of teaching her to solve problems creatively and with dignity and respect for all involved. Just my two cents. Spanking is never ok.

spank the kid until they stop doing whatever it is they are doing wrong. when they stop acting like a child then that is when they should stop being treated like a child. spank away!

I was spanked at 14 over the knee and bared for stealing! The spanking was by hand and lasted 20 minutes because I lied about stealing. I was spanked by the babysitter and it hurt like hell but I deserved it!

Teff...can you please explain how hitting a child that doesn't understand why you are doing it makes any sense at all?? Punishment is used as a tool to correlate being "bad" with bad things. It's simple cause and effect, do something bad, get a spanking. It wouldn't work if the kid didn't understand the concept.

She is being abused. No question about it. I would tell her to confide in a counselor. If you are questioning whether it's normal or not then chances are that your instinct is trying to tell you something. Just think of this: her parents are teaching her that it's ok to hit to solve a problem!

No, in my opinion, it is not. A fourteen year old is still developing mentally and thus is very vulnerable. Taking away something they enjoy immensely as a punishment and explaining why is much more effective.

I agree with nocharge. Spanking a fourteen year old indicates a lack of control in the family. The parents are desperate for control and are trying anything at that point. The REASON spanking is inappropriate after the age of ten is because your child is now developing SEXUALLY (duh!!) Spanking becomes degrading and humiliating beyond the need for discipline at puberty and a parent of the opposite sex spanking a fourteen year old borders on sexual abuse (come on its creepy!). Another interesting side effect of spanking a teenager is that eventually they might hit you!! My husband was spanked inappropriately like that and he eventually just threw a chair at his dad. There is not a professional advocate for spanking under the sun who would condone spanking a teenager. Parents stop this right now before violence escalates in your home.

Yes, 14 is an age where you 100% no excuses know right from wrong .. The child either refuses to listen, has a mental problem, or is being abused!!!

Second, as to whether or not 14 is too old for a spanking: I would say it depends on the situation. I've seen some kids (teens) that are generally well-behaved, but screw up every now and then, and still get spanked. To me, that's not fair. To me, the parent isn't trying other discipline methods first when they should.

Now, on the opposite side of the spectrum, if a parent has tried grounding, taking away the Internet, cell phones, video games, etc. and the child is still acting out, maybe family counseling is in order? If that fails, the only thing left that I can see is a spanking since you've tried everything else.
