Is 5'8 short for a man?

I think it's about average. I want to say I was told 5'9" was the average, but I think 5'8" is close enough to still be considered average.

Shorter than average for Caucasians and Africans, probably not for most other races.

If he's going to playing basket ball - yes, too short.

If he's into maintenance in tight quarters (submarines and certain industrial plants)... then even that might be taller than desired.

As a midget in the circus, or for acting. Yes... Tall (you would not even be allowed).

Overall - sounds close to average to me.
