Inn to hate your siblings when they're away but in person you're cool?

Call me crazy, but when my siblings, be it brother or sister, are mentioned while away, I really hate them but when in person, I'm alright with them. I had issues with them both. My brother's usually angry/ griping and groaning about how other's are incredibly stupid and he bullied me in the past. My sister has been manipulative in the past and she's a bit ditzy. He hates her. She feels that he's a miserable fill-in-the-blank. And get this, both of them think the other's immature. Just thinking of them pisses me off. But, When I get together with them like for a family gathering or one's home from college, I don't get that upset. Is it normal to hate them behind their back but then when they're here, to be ok?

I am somewhat envious of my brother. He was away for the most tragic part of my life, and we never really talk, but its both our fault. When he's home, I really want to connect with him though. I think for me, it's that he's supposed to be my brother but he's away and it feels distant like he isn't really.

Maybe you just get mad at them because they are supposed to be family but it feels like they've just left, and you can't remember anything good about them because those moments only happen when you can see them. I guess. I'm struggling. But what I'm trying to say is that yes it's normal.

I guess being able to tolerate and be civil with them despite it is what makes society function. I can't tell you how many times I've met someone and because of a slight I wanted to tear their throat out but years later would be thankful of the relationship we developed.
