Inn that my roommate does these things? (possible alcoholic)

Hey guys,

So I have this friend who recently became my roommate a few months ago. I knew he drank beer and liked to party but was also responsible at the same time. When we both moved into our apartment, I started to notice that each morning there was a plethora of beer cans in the sink, presumably from the night before (like 10 cans). Someday there were tons of beer cans and some days not. I can always hear when he opens a beer can in the other room, and it's quite a bit. I'm not a big drinker, so I don't know what's "a lot" or whatever. He used to always ask if I wanted a beer, which he knows I don't like beer. One day I was really curious and went in his room because I never saw beer boxes around the apartment and saw that he had like two 30 packs just sitting around, with some empty bottles/cans in them, as well as some folded up 30 pack boxes just stacked in his closet. He never "acts" drunk (slurring words, stumbling) but he's drinking like...10 or more beers a day.

Does...uh...does he need help?

Hopefully he hasn't reached the 'dependant' stage.
There's lot's of youtube video's about alcoholism, you should get him to watch them. Alcohol is poison, it poisons your body and your mind.

I got accepted into the Victorian Police Force, I was told I would have to wait 2 years to get a spot in the academy, in that time I had serious problems (long Story) I turned to alcohol and destroyed my health and sanity, lost my place in the academy and now 6 years latter am still struggling with alcohol, I have scar tissue on my liver, I have vomited blood and been to ER twice suffering severe withdrawel, help your friend stop before it's to late.

10 beers a day is definitely alcoholic status. I'd say that 3 beers a day on a regular basis is unhealthy. 10 is pretty out there. He may be 'functional,' but healthy he is not.

  • It's normal for an alcoholic. Alcoholism is pretty common. As long as he drinks responsibly, eats good, cleans up after himeslf, and isn't lazy because of it, you shouldn't worry about it. You can bring it up but continuously lecturing a functional alcoholic will come across as nagging and he may get annoyed.

Truth about the lecturing. I can imagine that gets old fast. I've never said anything about it, I'm just generally concerned I guess.

You might need help pretty soon if the beer expenditures start eating into his share of the rent, etc.

Yeah true. I don't think he'd let it get to that, he knows how I would feel.

well, he likes to drink.. as long as he's responsible and goes to work and doesn't cause any problems, I'd say don't worry so much.

I drank close to that much when I was 16/17 every night apart from Sundays, I wasn't an alcoholic but I just had a really active social life. Different circumstances but don't just assume he is an alcoholic.

Yeah I guess I wouldn't be as worried if he wasn't drinking alone all the time. He drinks the same amount whether there's people around or not.
