Inn how to make sure a kid has good self esteem?

So, My wife and I cannot have kids ,so we decided to become foster parents. We have to work on how the kids act at a restaurant , but otherwise they make us so happy.They don't even mind that I am the worst basketball player ever and that our pool isn't very big.

The one little kid is really hard on himself and calls himself stupid a lot. He also gets very frustrated at himself and smacks himself. We constantly reassure him that he is awesome.Any suggestions are welcome on what else we can do?

    Maybe he has some problems at his last home or vicinity? You guys could just keep continuing to love him, take him out to great places, or maybe even give him a teddy bear? Teddy bears/stuffed animals are great.

    How old is he? I wasn't aware little kids had self esteem issues. What you're doing now seems like the best thing anyone could ever do. I'm sure with continuos love and assurance, he'll come to realize his true worth on his own.
