Im gonna stop watching the news

Every day, the news comes on and there's some sick shit about people getting murdered and raped and all sorts of fucked up occurrences.

All it does is piss me off. I dont feel like there is any reason to listen to it as it doesn't inform you of anything that is in any way useful.

My dad watches the news and gets all angry about the middle east and all sorts of crap that doesn't affect him, then he's in a bad mood all day.

If something important happens and it affects me, im pretty sure ill find out about it anyway before it's on the news.

Just now there was a story on the news of a 100 year old woman who died after having her neck broken a week ago in a street robbery. I just turned it off because I was pissed off about it even though it doesnt affect me and theres nothing I can do about it, so why should I have the stress of hearing about something so horrible?

I think it would be good for a lot of people to stop watching the news and would probably reduce a lot of stress and depression.

What do you gyes fink?

You're right: the news is a constant stream of negativity and the vast majority of what's reported has no direct impact on us as individuals. Even worse, there's nothing we can do as individuals to solve the problems reported by the news, and feeling powerless in the face of danger or sheer evil does lead to depression and despair.

The media has to fill the minutes and their websites with sensational new stuff all the time so they can attract eyeballs and sell advertising. What's worse, humans are wired to be fascinated by death and destruction, because paying attention to dangers is how our species survived. When Ug saw a sabre-tooth tiger having his buddy Og for lunch, you can be damn sure he paid attention to which path it happened on and all his tribe listened carefully when he reported that piece of news.

Some people will say that ignoring the news is wrong because we should all be well-informed and involved with our society, politics, and what's going on around us. I think that if you really want to be a positive force rather than merely an enraged voyeur, the best thing you can do is pick a cause that concerns you and do something concrete to help. It could be the welfare of elderly people, young people, or animals, homelessness, some aspect of your local environment, or anything else that makes you feel sad or angry. It doesn't matter what it is, as long as you get involved with a local group, learn about the issues, and do something to make your little corner of the world a better place.

It's highly unlikely that whatever you get involved with will ever make the news because positive stuff rarely does, and you probably won't have any great victories or permanently fix something that needs fixing, but you will at least be able to know that you've done what you could to improve the world rather than just getting pissed off and shouting at your TV or monitor.

Yeah I never understood why that stuff is even on the news, it's so common that it's not really newsworthy. It doesn't affect the state of society in any way. Plus it's completely useless information for everyone except the people that it affects directly.

I fucking hate watching the news. It's just a constant reminder how awful some humans can be. It makes me want to throw things and leaves me with burning rage, yet I still watch it. If we didn't think about the stuff going on in the world and carried on living our own happy lives with our heads in the sky that would be equally as fucked up, I think. I don't know.
