Im getting tired of this

My daughter who will be 7 in February wants a spiderman birthday party! Its so cute...I already pinned party ideas on pinterest. But at a boys party the other day he had superhero theme and when I mentioned what my daughter wanted at her party I was met with a weird look and silence as the woman just turned away from me ...like she didn't approve...naturally this made me mad.

I have to deal with this kind of stuff all the time its like a big uphill battle I have to fight for my daughter...and not just adults but kids too... one time my daughter wanted to drink out of a Spiderman cup and a little boy told her she couldn't cuz that was a boy thing. He even tried to take the cup away and I had to stop him and tell him there is no such thing as only for boys.

My daughter likes Spiderman and zombies she also likes barbie and hello kitty. And I get distressed that people are telling her she cant like the "boy" things...

As a kid I didnt have anyone tell me I cant like something cuz im a girl (I was way into batman)
I was wondering If anyone else experiences this as much as I have with my daughter...im thinking maybe its where we live?

I only listed two examples but I have many more.

    That is pretty sad.

It's just as bad for boys, unfortunately.

Kids should be free from all that rubbish...

We have these prescribed notions of gender which we're indoctrinated with during childhood. We assimilate them, and push them onto our children.

Thankfully, many societies are relaxing somewhat into the idea that behaviour can be more fluid than before, that challenging gender roles shouldn't necessitate compromising your dignity or your respect.

It would be nice if we could move away from the idea that man should be one thing, women should be another, regardless of what the individual wants.

        Exactly!

I've heard about boys playing with dolls - until someone would point out that they're "for girls".

At least females have a 'tomboy' archetype which is actually looked upon pretty positively; a girl who shows she's a bit tough, not into dresses or pink, wants to climb trees etc. might not be universally accepted, but plenty of kids and parents would think that was normal, admirable even.

What's the equivalent for boys? A boy who is a little more effeminate, isn't into traditionally masculine hobbies or games, has a gentle sensibility - what positive archetype do they full under? None. They're weak - a faggot, a pussy - they should man up, act tough, quit acting like a girl... And so on.

The whole notion of masculine = strong, powerful / feminine = weak, powerless, still seems to influence how we perceive each other and our children.

A sad but true fact :(
I have told people of my brother playing barbie with me ...and its always "lol seriously? "

U know what else bothers me... I love the color blue ... do u know how much blue is available to girls that isn't paired with pink? HARDLY ANY!
I dont have a boy but if I do I already know how irritated ill be at boy baby clothing ....like 90% of it is all sports

Have u gone to look at baby clothing before? If not go take a look its all super stereotyped.

Ugh, that's ridiculous. Though its good parenting on your part that you're encouraging her to be herself. She'll need all the self-confidence she can get once adolescence hits.
