Is it normal users! where were you a decade ago?

I'm asking because my sis and I were discussing memories that we had together. Now I'd like to know more about you lovely regular users.

A decade ago I was in high school. I'd cut class just to go to the library and read manga/exchange manga with buddies. I was one of those "honor students" with high grades despite not studying. I listened to a bunch of emo and indie bands. I was also angry at my parents for bringing up four children when they couldn't afford to take care of us, though I got over that "angry with them" thing shorly after graduating. Things seemed a lot simpler back then.

How about you lovely people?

I'll share. 15

In my living room with Kerrang TV on listening to Good Charlotte, or playing football or Pokemon, or sitting in my room feeling anxious about something.

I was in 8th grade.. I was an ugly nerd but I was friends with some of the popular kids who were nice enough to feel sorry for me, and they would sort of protect me, but I would also let them cheat off my tests and I did their homework in study hall for money, food, charms, whatever they could pay me with..
That was also when I became addicted to the Internet and sites like runescape and gaiaonline (go-gaia back then) consumed my life.. As well as other chat rooms and forums, some of which I engaged in primitive forms of trolling.. And I had the original iPod shuffle with things like boards of Canada, lemon jelly, dj shadow, royksopp.. I felt cool that no one around had ever heard of the music I listened to, I guess I was a hipster in that way, before hipster was even really anything.. lol

I can't remember exactly. I'm pretty sure this was during my Americorp stint. I was helping place tutors in underserved schools. It was a nice gig. I met some amazing people.

I was happy. I had an amazing boyfriend, a housemate who didn't piss me off, and a sweet kitty. We also had a big yard with a hammock. I miss having a hammock.

I was doing a fine arts course. I was 20, carefree, confident and this was 2 years before my drug addiction so healthy, active and rarely depressed. It was the happiest time of my life.

Sitting alone on my boat suffering from deep depression. I was lonely and unhappy, and I had been for many years. Then one day, about 5 years ago, I got tired of the whole thing, got up, went outside and stopped letting the depression rule my life. No more drugs, doctors or therapists; not one had been of any help.

2004, I was in the forth grade. Studying hard. Hanging out with my friends in after school. I wasn't into music at that time. I was obsessed with video games.

  • I was a stay-at-home mom, living it up with my infant daughter.

My husband made enough to support us all back then. Since then, the price of survivng exceeded what we could afford.

I was 16. Still did drugs, but not as bad. The weed and liquor made up for that, though. Had a drug addicted 19 year old boyfriend. Lived with him and a roomie for a bit.
My life literally 180'd from that by the time I was 19 though. Well, except my taste in music. 15-20 had amazing music. It's all gone now, but I'd rather have my present life than good new music. Despite my life still being difficult, it's improved dramatically since I met my fiance 7 years ago.

A decade ago, I was working at a job that paid far much more than the shitty one that I have now. My life was a lot better as a whole. Fast forward ten years and the so called "made up" recession that we all have had to endure is still going strong. I think that they all put together a "handbook" of sorts that says don't hire people over 50(or 40 in some cases), scale back how much all of us make and have less people than before doing a lot more work, but not throw them a bone for a little bit more $$$ with the $$$ they're saving. You never see raises or bonuses any more, but your medical insurance goes up every damn year, so you end up in the hole even more. To top it all off, when we complain or fight back, we are told "you should be happy that you have a job, there are others out there far worse off than you." It's one thing to start off a little worse off than where you were, but to keep being held back is ridiculous. I'm sorry to rant, but when I hear ten years ago compared with today. I get ornery. The sad thing is that I don't think it will ever go back to where it was and a lot of people are going to never be able to retire and if they do, it's going to be a very meager existence.

In second year uni, hating it. Anxiety and low self worth getting an overwhelming hold of me. Not doing any work, not attending classes....I'd catch the bus in (50min journey) to sit at the bus stop for an hour or two, so my grandmother wouldn't know I wasn't going to my classes, then go home.

Working part time, loving it. Feeling incredibly valued and respected and NEEDED...fairly new feelings for me. Getting ready to go on my first overseas working holiday...also my first ever trip overseas, or even on a plane.
