Is it normal tv makes no sense? don’t you just love the logic of tv series?

I have noticed in a lot of shows even some anime have the strangest sense of logic. Even shows that are suppose to be more realistic. In Naruto everyone even the humans seem to be able to jump tree to tree in one foot since apparently every human is born with this outstanding jumping power. In super man he hides his identity by putting on a pair of glasses. At least robin wears a mask over his eyes. In Romeo&Juliet they do not realize the bandit has red hair. For about 12 episodes they go around town attacking people and do not notice even if he is a foot away that they should looking for a redhead. I love the logic in these series! Isn't it just wonderful?

"even some anime" SHOCK what... EVEN animé?! :P That's some crazy shit you speakin'!

Of course some television shows require suspension of disbelief. Those that rely on fantasy and stretches of imagination need you to forgive some lack of realism otherwise you won't invest in the story, the characters or the universe of the programme, you'll just be pointing out "that's unrealistic. How can they do that?".

But it's still supposed to 'make sense' because usually there is a narrative that the audience has to be able to comprehend. These bits of surreality aren't supposed to render us confused, they're just devices - maybe to advance the plot or to make the visuals more interesting.

So yes it's normal some television programmes don't strictly adhere to the laws of the universe outside the television screen, but no it's not normal for television to "make no sense" :)

    • A great example of this rule not being followed is Pokemon. They have an education system, science, meat to eat, animals that fight and school. While everyone seems to know things they have no real education system. They only teach you about Pokemon and which case a vet might make sense but not a human doctor or scientist. They claim that you can not hurt animals but scientists keep them at labs. You can not eat a Pokemon but you can eat meat. The way Digimon gets away with this is that they have an established world and the digimons come from a digital world. It is a computer game so they do not have to explain everything else.

Oh I understand what you mean, but sometimes the lack of logical thought or procedure IS what makes something lacking in realism, and sometimes that lack of logical thought or procedure IS to enable certain events to happen. Pokémon is pure fantasy, and rational and logical thought is abandoned in much of the Pokemon world - but if it weren't for that, the whole fantasy would collapse. The stories still 'make sense' within the Pokémon universe.

When a programme is purporting to be a representation of something real, like a lot of crime dramas, sometimes the writers will do something stupid that's unnecessary and breaks the verisimilitude. However when a programme isn't trying to represent reality, they can get away with a lot, including illogicality.

But yeah, there's something fun about the way writers can twist and play with logic on TV. As long as it's done well and with good artistic intentions, I'm happy :) Like Clark Kent's poor disguise, it's just a charming quirk of the Superman series. So I agree with you, it's wonderful.

        • You can not be tied to a chair one second and suddenly not be in it anymore. You can not from that point walk away. You have to explain how you got out of the chair. If you do not people are going to be asking why. In which case you are just a very bad writer. If you are jumping from one part of the story to another you are going to have to explain how you got stuck and unstuck at one point.

        • You seem to have the impression a lot of people have. Which is completely wrong. I know you think that writing fantasy means no rules but that is incorrect. You have to follow a certien set of rules. These are the rules that all writers should follow.

No, I don't have the impression that 'writing fantasy means no rules'. I think the imagined universe constructed by a writer should have consistency, which means rules and laws self-imposed and adhered to. You CAN be tied to a chair one second and not be in it anymore the next, as long as it is consistent with the laws of that imagined universe.

Based on this and that other comment you deleted about not discussing this with me any further because I clearly could never understand your point, you seem to have the impression I'm an idiot, which is (almost) completely wrong.

    • Yes I realize the rules of writing a story. Unlike many think even a fairy tale needs structure. I am not pointing out the realism. I am pointing the rule of logic. Like if you are looking for a criminal you might think to note some characteristics. Yet this is something they ignore many times. I care not for the realism. Logic and realism is not the same thing at all.

Anime is very unrealistic, especially harem shows, which i despise.

Oh Lord, harem. Although honestly, I think harem's biggest crime is that once you've seen one harem anime, you've seen them all.

I agree, except for Cat Planet Cuties. The title does not give the show justice but I like how the main character isn't a shy guy and the girls have a legit reason for constantly being in the guys house.
