Is it normal to wear evil halloween costumes, even though they represent crime?

I was at a Halloween party with people dressed as famous murderers. They had opinions about what murderers were acceptable to portray. I have no interest in any of it. But if Halloween is about being scary, why are some things off limits and others, also awful, are considered normal?

Halloween is the only time of year when its acceptable to do this - its all good. Only in specific situations would it be frowned upon - like you dont dress as the local murderer who killed billy, his mom and dog last week.

Thank you for your ideas on this! It sounds like you're saying that a local or personal story needs time. If someone were to dress up as someone who committed a local crime, would it ever be a good time?

So I guess what I am trying to say is that its probably best to stay away from hate crime based murderers.... or murders surrounding racial issues.

That sounds good to me anyway. And there are those untouchable mentions, like Hitler - they might give other people the impression that your hiding some sort of 'hate' and using halloween as a way to sorta slip it in and see what people think....... m ut8edi has a good point.

The above poster is right, but I think it applies to a wider range, any touchy subject. Imagine if someone dressed as Hitler for Halloween, uniform and everything. How sensitive a subject is depends on who you're with. I had a friend get cornered and beaten because he was wearing an Osama Bin Laden costume.

You raise an interesting point. Why would someone have a problem with the Bin Laden costume? Every year, presidential masks are a huge seller. Presidents usually preside over wars. Bin Laden was 'America's most wanted'. Pretty scary, but someone beat up your friend for it. Hitler was an evil figure, could be perfect for a scary Halloween costume, but is off limits. Yet, the devil is always a popular costume.
