Is it normal to wave the confederate flag as a northerner?
I'll be honest and say that I don't like the confederate flag. I do support people's freedom of expression however, and I've dismissed usage of the flag to a southern thing. Most people say it represents Southern Pride and I understand. However, I recently went to Indiana and my relatives had the confederate flag around their homes. They kept repeating that it represented their southern heritage. They're not southern, though. That branch of my family has lived in Indiana since they came to America from Germany.
It wasn't even just them, though. I went to a county carnival where there was once again a confederate flag. It's Indiana. They were literally the yankees and it confuses me. I would understand if they said it represented rebellion. Hell, even if they said it was white supremacy I'd remove myself from the situation and move on. Why say southern pride though? Is this a normal thing now?
