Is it normal to want to be mentally ill?

I don't get it personally, but I know people who are like this. They research mental illnesses (and make note of all of the famous who have/had them), talk openly about how crazy they are, and when they go to the doctor, they are dismissed because they become too attached to the idea of having a mental illness. People seem to think that being mentally ill will make them special or unique in some way, as though being a suicidal sad-sack will make them a hit at parties or something (no disrespect to people who are actually mentally ill). Why don't we see people talking about how cool their eczema is, or blathering about the famous people who had Crohn's?

Mental illness is weirdly romanticized in media. Everyone can see how debilitating something like Chron's would be, but based on how something like multiple personality disorder is shown in movies, people think that it would be a fun and wacky adventure to suffer from.

because its not cool? i've developed a psychosis. it's not cool. it makes me feel disconnected from everybody, even the people that i love. i can't tell how i really feel about myself or what i think about anything in general. reality is an illusion to me and it makes functioning in every day life almost impossible.

why, why, why would you want a mental illness?? it's like people who say they want braces. you want to have to restrict what you eat and have the insides of your cheeks scratched up and torn after going through the agony of all the pressure in your mouth causing you to need medication? why would you want that?

It might be a type of Factitious Disorder (Google it).

It might not be the act of faking an illness - more of the beginning stages of really wanting one.

Tell those people to jump with glee - they might actually have a mental illness.

I think these people would get less sympathy or recognition or whatever they desire from people because personally I think it's pathetic to tell someone that you have a disorder of faking disorders.

  • I do believe there is a connection between genius and insanity.
Some mental disorders do have benefits but the disabling symptoms often make it near impossible to ever get anywhere using those benefits.
I have been diagnosed with a few disorders although in some ways I feel more sane than most people. The hard part is I have not figured out how to function in society or achieve what other people seem to do so easily.
i can mention a few benefits I have that seem to be related to being different. I have savant skills which I realize doesn't apply to most people who get diagnosed.
I can listen to any song and play it on almost any instrument. I also compose my own music, usually from stuff I hear in my head or in dreams.
Speaking of dreams I seem to remember them much better than most people to the point where they are detailed as this world. I could explain why I think dream worlds are real, but that is another story.
I notice patterns in everything and have excellent problem solving abilities.
I have a photographic memory, although not as good as the guy who draws entire cities from memory, but I was rated 99th percentile at it.
My long term memory is really good. I remember being a baby and other long ago details. My short term memory however is not good. I often cannot recall things that just happened.
I am creative with most things. I have excellent imagination, but my imagination is spontaneous. I usually cannot come up with stuff on purpose. Its like my mind is on autopilot.
I am aware of many things most people are not aware of such as various glitches in the reality we are in. I have a good understanding of science as well that I can apply to my experiences.

It is very frustrating to have great talents while being unable to have basic life skills. The reason some people who are different excel in certain areas is because the mind balances out skill levels. Most people are rounded out in the middle with different abilities, where some people have very scattered abilities.

I am extremely curious about your perception of reality.

      • To give a brief summary, reality is only shared perception. I'm not even sure it has to be shared because I can only know my own perception exists. There is no way to confirm anyone else is real.
Dreams are interesting because other characters seem to have their own free will.
Do you ever have people in dreams tell you something you didn't know?
If you created them in your mind wouldn't you be controlling them?
        Yet they have free will.
Therefore I do not think dreams are much different from here at all.

If you have more specific questions I will be glad to answer.

They actually have a mental illness I forgot what its called.. But it's based on attention seeking behavior and wanting to play the victim a lot.

That being said Idk why anyone would want to have any type of mental illness. Anyone who has actually had a mental illness knows for a fact they wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I don't like those types of people. They're crazy in their own special kind of way. :/

These people are seeking an excuse for not getting off their asses and living their lives. They want everybody to feel sorry for them and excuse their totally immature behavior, because they really don't want to be adults, get a job and be responsible adults.
They would be perfectly happy, dressed in diapers, living in a playpen and fed mush the rest of their lives.
