Is it normal to walk as close to strangers as possible in public?

Whenever I'm walking somewhere on my own and there's a person in front of me I have to walk as close to them as possible. Literally inches behind them, and if someone is behind me I'll slow down, wait for them to walk in front of me, then catch up. IIN?

At school during lunch people at my school walk very closely behind others to make it seem like they have lots of friends. One time I was walking out the front doors and I looked back and like 3 people were walking very close behind me. People at school are so insecure theirs nothing wrong with being alone. Sometimes I prefer to be alone because my friends annoy me.

Because, you crave human touch/interaction? Or, because you are fearful of something? You don't want people to think that are alone and vulnerable?
