Is it normal to wake up with a racing heart after drinking

I eat a lot when I drink. Is it the food that's causing this?

Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol makes your blood vessels dilate (ie become wider), which can lower your blood pressure quite a bit. As a result, your heart has to pump faster to circulate enough blood throughout your body. That only happens if you drink way too much...not good, op.

I don't know. The only times that's ever happened to me, I was drinking LARGE quantities of a liqueur, like peppermint schnapps, and had only a normal amount of food to eat. Seemed to me it was the liqueur, not the food. Never had it happen with any other alcoholic beverage.

Yes it happens to me. Drink lots of water before you go to bed. The food soaks up the alcohol and the water in your body and the alcohol itself dehydrates you so you need to drink a lot of water. Your blood was probably pretty thick and harder to pump by your heart, causing it to race like that.
