Is it normal to use shared items without asking first?

I'm living with a friend and she is the first person outside my family I've lived with so I'm not sure if what she gets annoyed by are really my bad habits or her just being fussy.

The latest incident involved us both having a salad on which she put olive oil that she had bought personally out of her own pocket. Without thinking I grabbed the house olive oil which we bought together and drizzled some on my salad (normal amount, I didn't over do it!). She got annoyed by this and said that she thought that I should have asked if she minded first; her reasoning being that if she uses her own stuff and I use the house stuff then I will use more of the stuff we bought together and I'd use more than my fair share. This ended up in a full blown row with her insisting I was wrong to do this. I don't think I was but since I've never lived with anyone outside my family before I am questioning myself a bit. Was I wrong?

That girl was surely on her period. You have the right to use whatever you have contributed in purchasing. If you give in on this she will end up putting more and more conditions until she suffocates you.

Yup, sharing non living objects is a good thing indeed!

That sounds silly. If you'd used something she'd bought specifically for herself, I'd understand, but shared stuff is...well...shared.
