Is it normal to think this site has been overrun by racists?

I've noticed that starting around early-mid 2015, is it normal started to get quite racist. I first noticed it when I started seeing a bunch of racist comments posted on a relatively neutral post about Asians, and starting about a few months ago the site seems to have been overrun by them. I am not saying that there weren't racists on this site before, but generally they were quarantined in little echo chamber posts like those "I hate black/white/Asian/etc." and didn't spread elsewhere. But these days, if you dare mention anything racial/ethnic in a post, it is very likely that someone is going to post something racist and that comment will be upvoted. For instance, there was one of those preference polls and one of the comments took issue with people liking Asians and called them "retarded monkey[s]", getting upvoted for it. I have seen a bunch of posts with the n-word and any mention of Muslim triggers a bunch of anti-Muslim (not anti-Islam, but anti-Muslim) comments (technically not racism but still hateful), both of which tend to be heavily upvoted. I've even posted a story recently regarding race and the highest voted comment was a white supremacist comment.

Yes, I know there always have been racists and other xenophobes on this site, but these days, it seems like they compose like at least 30-45% of the population on this site. And yes, I know people are entitled to your own beliefs, but these days I notice that there is a huge presence of racism on IIN. It's like this site is quickly becoming Stormfront (albeit with slurs) or /pol/.

Is it normal to think this?

    I feel you. I didn't realize how bad it was until I recently posted on a few topics and was surprised by the kind of words and ideas that were thrown around. I have lurked this website for at least a year or so and didn't ever notice it being that bad.
