Is it normal to think that prepubescent obesity hindered my development?

Hi, so I've been wondering for a while now if it is normal to believe that being obese before puberty hindered my development. Is there any evidence of this in others?

I was morbidly obese as a child and throughout high school (about 300 lbs). When I finally began losing weight, I lost about 120 lbs in 2 years, and I realized I never really developed proper breasts or wide hips. Something that has been a characteristic of my family before me. It's really bothered me that I might have done this to myself by being an obese child and I was wondering if anyone else had this issue.

I'm a 20 year old female, 5 ft 7 in, about 180 lbs, with size B breasts and disproportionate small hips.

  • Your hips may look more pronounced if you lose even more weight. Try getting down to 130-140 range.

You are to be commended for having come this far though as well.

Being very large as you reach puberty can affect the development of your sexual characteristics. Obese boys have a harder time with natural sexual development.

Awesome job losing all that weight! You sound very proportional to me. A B cup is nothing to be ashamed of lol.

Obesity affects hormone levels in your system and of course hormones primarily drive your development right through childhood and adolescence. So yes, it's possible obesity may have affected your development, but it's not the only reason. Genetics play a huge role, but there's also other factors like the environment that contribute.

I'm not too well read up on the research concerning obesity and the hindering of development but if I wasn't tired, I'd do a mild amount of research and tell you where you where to look. Google it, I am sure you will receive your answer there.

But yes, I feel that obesity probably could have hindered your development. I have seen studies concerning it, but I am not 100% sure. Common sense dictates that a body under the stress that obesity causes would fail to develop properly, childhood obesity is very dangerous to a child's development and I am willing to believe just about anything regarding the effects of obesity on the developing body. Drinking, drugs, even excess caffeine can negatively impact development.
