Is it normal to think that alcohol is the most addictive drug in the world?

Alcohol seems to me to be one of the most widely used recreational drugs. Since so many people think alcohol is acceptable, is it possible that they are in denial about their alcohol addiction?

Why does it have to be addiction, just because it has the potential to be abused..? Not everybody who drinks alcohol daily has a problem. It's pretty normal in some cultures, the people just have more self-control and moderation.. If that's addiction then lots of people are addicted to thinks like food or coffee.

There are certainly many people addicted to food; lonely people who replace human companionship with food. Coffee is also an addictive substance; just ask any heavy coffee drinker; the withdrawal is every bit as painful as that of many more acceptably addictive things. Your argument is quite flawed.

I drink strong coffee regularly, but I every so often stop drinking coffee for a week or so, and I don't have any problems doing this, so it might be a habit but it certainly it's an addiction. I'm not saying others aren't addicted, but coffee is actually healthy and you probably need to drink quite a lot to be genuinely addicted.

I agree with the OP, I drink orange juice every day but no-one accuses me of being addicted, just because certain substances can be addictive and I regularly consume them doesn't make me addicted.

I know there are people addicted to coffee and food, but I was saying that not everybody who eats food or drinks coffee is addicted to it (obviously), same with alcohol.

I disagree, I would think it's love. Just think about all the actions people do in order to attain it or numb their own pain for not having it. Speaking from observation, alcoholics are usually the loneliest people you can meet.

Compared to tobacco, alcohol is nothing!
I have been trying to quit tobacco for over 35 years, spending thousands of dollars and experiencing guilt and feelings of failure pretty much constantly. I know it is killing me and yet the thought of quitting is the most terrifying thing I have ever felt.
Would that there were the support systems available for tobacco that there are for drugs or alcohol.

I was both a smoker and a drinker and found it easier to stop smoking than drinking. The drawback is that I've compensated by drinking even more.

Agreed. Nicotine is more addictive than heroin.

I don't think so. It definately is the most accepted drug in the world, but not the most addictive.

It's normal for people to drink alcohol, I like it myself too. But by far most people can control themselves, they can stay away from it if they want to. That doesn't make it too addictive, does it? Only weak persons don't have the power to control themselves.

How different is that with other drugs? Once you start using it you just can't stay away from it anymore, quitting such drugs is much harder than quitting alcohol. Therefor I think those drugs are far more addictive.

Man, heavy drinkers can get seizures and die if they quit cold turkey. You don't get that with say, heroin. As for weak people, there might be some truth there... but I seriously think some people are genetically predisposed to alcohol addiction ie. they're not weak, it's just a lot harder for them to stop once they've started. Anyway, I agree it's probably not the MOST addictive... but possibly has the most addicts?

Definitely way more addictive/dangerous than it might get credit for, because its taxed and its everywhere. But I wouldn't say the most addictive drug out there. Amphetamines can pretty moreish and opiates have much worse withdrawals, for example. But I agree that there are a lot of people addicted to alcohol who may not realise just how addicted they are.
