Is it normal to think smoking cigarretes = character flaw?

Smoking cigarettes to me is a character flaw. Everyone is aware of the harmful effects of cigarettes not to mention the absurd price of a pack (8-11$ in New York) but people still waste their time, money and health away smoking them.

Ive come to the conclusion that its just a social status thing. People smoke cigarettes to appear a certain way to others, not because they enjoy doing so. Giving someone a cigarette means a lot more than what it appears to. If you give someone a cigarette its a way of inviting them to chat with you, but why not just talk to them like a normal human being? Giving a smoke to a stranger normally means your interested in getting to know that person. Watching a group of people sitting out in the freezing cold smoking a cigarette always gives me a kick because it looks like the least enjoyable thing imaginable but that's just socializing to them. I once heard a kid say to my friend he shouldn't leave the party cause hes the only one that gave him a cigarette, it's just pathetic.

I just don't see the appeal in purposely putting my self into the position where I need a cigarette to get through my day because I'm addicted. That's the sad thing though, people that smoke know whats going to happen but yet they still do it...

Who do you know that just gives them to strangers to have a reason to talk? I think you made that part up.... I smoke, and yes, I agree it is un healthy and expensive, but so is mcdonalds, driving a car, and a lot of other things billions of people do. Personally, I think it's a character flaw to judge people for something that only effects their own life. If you haven't been a pack-a-day smoker for at least 5 years, then you are in no position to tell others to 'just quit' it's a lot harder and deeper than you might think.

    • Pretty much everyone in my life smokes cigarettes with the exception of family. Im not saying smoking cigarettes is the worst thing someone can do in the world. You just can't compare them to doing other things in life because people know that they are crafted to become addicting.

I'm not making up the part about people using cigarettes to get to know others. That may not be the primary use for them and understand people become heavily addicted. I wouldn't say its wrong to judge someone for smoking them especially when it can affect you in some way. When ever I go out I come home wreaking of cigarettes even though I dont smoke.

Smoking just doesn't make any sense to me. I don't hate people because of it. There have been very few people i've met in my life that aren't smokers. I just find it funny that everyone im introduced to through friends that smoke also smoke.

I'm not sure that your depiction of smoking as a "character flaw" is as accurate as it may initially seem. Yes, it can be defined as such because, these days, smoking is frowned upon but, because it's an addiction, it's something else and therefore it's very possible that an otherwise together person can be a smoker. A lot has to do with one's initial perceptions of smoking, accurate or not, and that is often a matter of one's social and cultural environment which, when added to the equation, can undermine the aspects one normally associates with a character flaw which is more individual in nature, that is, devoid of outside influences.
As such, it's more a judgement depiction and lacks the complete picture.

    I hate ciggarettes.

Only becuase my mum has smoked them as long as I can remember so I think I've been programmed against them.

It's £7.21 for a packet of ciggarettes here. They make you smell, they make you ill, they make you have to leave the room every 10 minutes.
I'm terrified when my mum smokes...not to mention whenever she does my throat closes up and I have trouble breathing.

In the UK it costs 50% more than that!

My dad gave me one of the best pieces of advice that I ever got, when I was about 12. He smoked but said, "Never start anything that you may not be able to afford to sustain."

I advised my son not to date a smoker coz they're too expensive a hobby, if you've to keep on setting fire to money in order to keep them happy!

I agree with your story, but technically cigarettes do relieve stress. Nicotine acts as a stimulant as well as a relaxant. Wikipedia that shit. Also, I am a non-smoker just for some qualification.
