Is it normal to think human infants are ugly?

I can't help the feeling that I'm preaching to the choir here, but am I alone on this? Whenever parents have a baby and they post pictures of it on facebook, everyone seems to unanimously holler out "omg how cute" or "how beautiful" etc. Personally I think human infants are rather ugly and the earliest I think anyone can presume to call them "cute" is around 2 years of age. I mean, seriously? Why do people keep saying newborns and young infants are cute when almost all of them look the same (not too appealing)?

Awe, they shouldn't stink. Unless you feed it something weird. I actually found it odd that they don't smell more. Like puppy breath doesn't really stink but dog breath is rank.

And op, its usually a familiar thing. Infants are very funny looking. But they do resemble parents and other family and I think that's often triggers the emotional awe....

See, that's the woman in you. I don't think most guys would agree. There's this sicky/sweet smell that I just cannot stomach.

I do have to agree with the statement as far as newborn's are concerned. Most of them look like minature Winston Churchills and that included both of mine. But they do (mostly) improve with age.

I think babies are ugly. They do not look like anyone in your family, they look like a potato

Some are ugly, some are beautiful, some are ordinary - just like real humans, eh?

Evolutionarily, mothers need to think their baby is beautiful and the most important baby in the world, to make up for all the hard work, sleepless nights, etc that go with motherhood, not to mention the guilt of never being the perfect mother.

I've noticed a big change in men's responses to babies over the last 30 years or so: it used to only be us women whose faces went all soft and doting when a new baby came into view, now lots of men do it too, which I think is great. Back then it was almost unheard of for men to carry babies around, take them to the supermarket or the park, now you see it all the time.

Humans in general are ugly as fuck compared to other species. Like look how cute kittens and puppies are compared to us.

Some are. It's mostly the size that gets me...those teeny tiny toes...

You can't tell a mother anything about her newborn other than niceties, don't you know?

If they arnt fresh out of the whom I think they are cute lol

I was very adamant that they clean my daughter before handing her to me. Sometimes they just throw the baby on top of you right after its born...still all covers in stuff. And im like no... you clean her off and bundle her up then hand her to me . Lol

But I have seen ugly babies... not all babies are created equal >_<

This is the complete opposite reaction I had. Clean? They aren't dirty. Unless something went wrong.

They are covered in blood and fluid... they are dirty
the doctors should bath them and bundle them for you... but some dont. I made sure tgey did that for me.
I do not want to be covered in blood and fluid and be sticky. I do not like the feeling of being sticky.

Should? Not really a matter of should. But maybe in a hospital where the concept of natural childbirth is a mystery. Must intervene with every aspect of birth.

And why the hell is a doctor involved, are you sick? Is the baby sick. The US treats birth like an illness. Which it is not and people are so ignorant about it.

I get the impression that there was no concern for the placenta. Just cut the cord while it is still throbbing. Clean that baby up first, wouldn't want to get a little sticky after hours of being a little sticky.

Personally, I have no desire to have my baby taken from me the moment he enters the world. A little bit of fluid on my skin is a sacrifice I am willing to make, lord knows he will bee peeing and puking on me in the future.

I said doctor but it would be a doctor who delivers the baby checks its health...nurses clean the baby

Im sorry did you give birth in a cave???
I had a doctor... thus decreasing the chances of complication. During my birthing I was in the hospital for 3 days. My water only broke a little so was slowly leaking. They tried to induce labor with medicine at first. That wasnt working so the doctor went in and broke the water.
Then he kindly delivered my baby with a few nurses standing there just in case... my mom and my bf. My bf cut the umbilical cord.
He watched as they cleaned her ... bundled her... then handed her to me. I tore a little and needed stitches.
I was never sticky... they clean you up down there.... they dont make you sit in your fluid...
so I was clean and my baby was clean.

After the hospital will instruct you on proper wash for yourself... since I had some stitches down there... and they make sure the baby can drink from you.
They have a photographer come in and offer newborn pics.
            You fill out paper work.
            and you pick your meal.
            its very nice.

You got in the middle of my rant about the whole system. Sorry. But since we are sharing.

I attempted a home birth. I labored at home. Rented a tub and soaked for relief and a potential water birth. My water never broke fully but never never never break the water. There is no need for it. Being born in the cul is magical. Breaking the water doesn't speed up delivery. Doctors often intervene when unnecessary.

anyway. My baby kept having decels and the midwives were concerned. You know, certified nurse midwives trained in the art of baby catching, not the art of how do we make this easier for us medics. But there is a time and a place for doctors. My baby was struggling so I ended up with a cesarean. They gently removed him. Stitched me up and let dad hold him as they wiped him down a bit, then put him on me, then covered both of us with a heated blanket. I am glad the surgeon was available, but most births don't actually require the level of intervention the doctors give. Most don't even know what a natural childbirth looks like. And with all this intervention we don't actually have a better success rate. It is worse.

But wish me luck, take two will be a different experience. But I still wont worry about fluid or stickiness. I expect to get some on me. It would be weird not to.
